Childhood Fears

“My images are not photoshop collages.I use photoshop to finesse details and to adjust color and contrast for printing.I use friends and family members as actors and crew.Everyone works for free. We do it for fun.” says Joshua Hoffine whose eye catching artworks may remind us of our very own childhood fears!

These are available for sale on his website.

Wow! This is some amazing/scary stuff!!

  5. 5 amanda Apr 29th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

makes you curious about the type of mind that would create and enjoy images like these.

  6. 6 sarah Apr 29th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

    these are amazing!

  7. 7 great work Apr 29th, 2008 at 12:35 pm

    really…just stunning

  8. 8 eatmeamanda Apr 29th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

Hey Amanda — go f*** your judgmental smug little self. Not everyone was a f****** happy-go-lucky little cheerleader running through the sprinklers on their well-manicured lawn, but I guess you would be clueless about that. I’ll bet you have loads of creative and artistic talent though, since you’re so critical of others’ work. Right?

  9. 9 jack Apr 29th, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Wow incredible. Totally captures the imagery of our darkest imagination.

  10. 10 wtf Apr 29th, 2008 at 1:39 pm

    that is scary

  11. 11 Linker Apr 29th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

    That’s really gets terrible :S

  12. 12 Divaliscious Apr 29th, 2008 at 1:45 pm

  13. 13 jocky300 Apr 29th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

    Absolutely fucking horrific.

  14. 14 imaginearea Apr 29th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

The monster under the bed was one of my childhood fears…I like this picture. I don’t like the ‘dead mother and child’ ones though…they are too gruesome for me. Great Photography.

  15. 15 Jess Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Amazing, I really like your pictures. They’ re amazing!!!

  16. 16 purple_dragonfly_fairy Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:07 pm

I love it, you did a great job. Keep up the good work. I think you should think about movie’s or something.

  17. 17 GoofyMonkey Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

What about.. “The floor is LAVA!!!” The Florr is LAVA!!

  18. 18 Ron Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Dude! I bet Halloween ROCKS at your house!

  19. 19 Max Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:26 pm

I was always terrified to go in my basement as a kid… It was always dark and since our house was made of wood, it creaked alot, so it made scary noises. I remember being scared of looking under the bed and everything… Those replicate really well childhood fears… (except the one wit the lady being pulled into the floor… that’s not really childhood)

  20. 20 dave Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

You are sick or summat for getting that girl to pose partially naked for your pics, call that art?

  21. 21 jazz Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

if there not photoshoped, then i invented the computer!!

    still good work tho!

  22. 22 Kreg Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:45 pm

The monster under the bed one – Any particular reason for the “Daddy No” spelled out in blocks?

  23. 23 May Apr 29th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Absolutely LOVE his work. Awesome stuff!

  24. 24 Hawk Apr 29th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Fucking awesome work. I love it. I thought I was the only one who was afraid of being grabbed from behind, at night, watching tv.

  25. 25 Dan Apr 29th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I absolutely hate clowns. Nice Work!

  26. 26 Majoris Apr 29th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

  27. 27 John Smith Apr 29th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

    Scary

  28. 28 Jurgen Apr 29th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Wow what an amazing photo gallery! Pure Art… creepy but really cool! Cheers for sharing!

  29. 29 wow scary Apr 29th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

the monster under the stairs was my fear tha’ts why i always run up the stairs espessialy my basement stairs

  30. 30 Kat Apr 29th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Absolutely amazing!!! I love that the wolfs leg on the stairs is a human hand and arm! I was completely afraid of the dark as a child and these monsters look a lot what I imagined ;) Love it! OK I do want to say to all of the people who want to find something negative to say like the guy who commented on the girl being naked in the picture ummm hello dumb ass the monster is in the CLOSET where the CLOTHES are its like they just have to find negativity in the world or the girl who questioned who would think up these things or enjoy them well…. most children imagine much scarier monsters than these and the appreciation comes in from having a visual to express those fears and also just looking at these pictures from an artistic point of view they are very very good as for the photo shop I believe that you have only enhanced them using photo shop I can see that you use a lot of props and make-up along with the right lighting so I say Congratulations!!!! a job well done

  31. 31 Parker Apr 29th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I think this is magnificent. Great work!

  32. 32 Carlos Rivera Apr 29th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

It really makes you wonder what kind of childhood the author of these pictures must have had.

I don’t argue about the technical quality of the pictures themselves, that is understood, but the underlying mental structure of someone with those childhood fears must have had some important issues that now by means of photography can encounter some sort of sublimation.

  33. 33 sarah Apr 29th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

    wow

  34. 34 mallovestrees Apr 29th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

At first glance, I was really creeped, but as I kept looking, I started to see the beauty in the portrayal of your fears. The little girls really capture how horrified they would be if what they were seeing was real. Great work!

  35. 35 Fallin Apr 29th, 2008 at 4:49 pm

wow… that really creeped me out.. these pictures reminded me of my childhood and put a freakishly accurate visual in my mind… these are amazing!!!! Excellent work!

  36. 36 Fearful Apr 29th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

I’m going to have trouble sleeping now, just like being a child again!

  37. 37 Mooner-one Apr 29th, 2008 at 5:42 pm

These are perfect! I think I suffered from just about all of these things at one time or other growin’ up. I’m blown away and flashin’ back! Thanks for the memories, as Jackie Gleason would say!

  38. 38 ManlyBallsiness Apr 29th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

It’s OK, I can’t say I was as scared as everyone here. Still, it’s very well done. Maybe I’m just more manly and ballsier than anyone else (jkjkjk).

  39. 39 jakko Apr 29th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

    Amazing. Love them.

  40. 40 Steve W Apr 29th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Most of these are still my fears now as an adult. Especially the gasmask one.

  41. 41 Mokevo Apr 29th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! That’s so awesome!

  42. 42 LBG Apr 29th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Very cool stuff! I was very impressed by the artwork and the technical skill involved. I also really liked the theme and just how well you took the canonical childhood fears and translated them into such real images.
I loved the one with the witch in hte cottage – perfect!

  43. 43 .... Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

great pics, not all of them i like, but all good quality and most are very original ideas.

  44. 44 viju Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

the intro makes you think you are going to see some amateur stuff. but this is absolute genius!

  45. 45 _terry Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

    wow…
    just amazingly wow!
the wolf on the staircase… damn.

  46. 46 josh Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

wow these are some crazy pics. kinda scary too.

  47. 47 Tyler Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

    wow those where cool

  48. 48 WryBeauty Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

These are FANTASTIC! The one with the slotted stairs freaks me out; that was the only fear I ever really had. Also, Dave is an idiot. You see what you choose to see within these pictures, so if your main focus was the little girls then you are the sick one, my friend.

  49. 49 maire Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

those are pretty disturbing! they really illustrate how lurid children’s imaginations can be. awesome work.

  50. 50 Adam Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Some I like more than others, but don’t say they arnt photoshop collages when they clearly are (#3 for instance, those lolly pops, and the person in the window, and id be willing to bet those skulls too)

    But still, very creative

  51. 51 arenee Apr 29th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

    very cool pics!

  52. 52 troy Apr 29th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

This is so, so awesome :-)
    What a brilliant concept.

The only sad part of it is some of the retarded comments in here that don’t get the artistic side of it or the concept.

Fancy commenting about a child being partially naked. WTF? It’s a child for gods sake. Is that poster so insecure about their own body or something?

  53. 53 isa Apr 29th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

“You are sick or summat for getting that girl to pose partially naked for your pics, call that art?”

Dave, it’s a child looking in a bedroom mirror. Did you never change clothes in your own room as a child?

You are sick for reading something sexual into an image of a child.

  54. 54 James Apr 29th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Stumble takes you to a lot of artist’s pages with their collection of art. . .this is the first one in a long time that is some really good stuff

  55. 55 ryan Apr 29th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

while they’re all pretty disturbing (and well done), the one of the boy with the gas-mask frightens the hell out of me. it’s the eyes…

  56. 56 beata Apr 29th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

that is so awesome, i love it, creepy but really interesting

  57. 57 ellen Apr 29th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

CREEPY! Loved it. Absolutely captured the fears of a child.

  58. 58 Cody Apr 29th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Wow, I have to say that these are indeed amazing. I definitely had that sitting on the couch thing going on and my sister was/is afraid of clowns.
Really, good work. Keep it up.

  59. 59 Debbie Apr 29th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Wow…don’t know what to say. Amazingly good but disturbing without
being that disturbing because in a couple of the pictures, you could
sort of tell that the people were having fun doing it. I loved it.
Put it in a book. It would sell.

  60. 60 Jeremy Apr 30th, 2008 at 12:28 am

These are all fantastic. Just because I’m a trusting person, I’ll believe that the photoshopping involved was purely aesthetic and had nothing to do with adding anything in.

The thing that surprised me the most was the emotional reactions the children were capable of showing. Not to mention the emotions evoked when I looked at each of the pictures. Good work.

  61. 61 Vicky Apr 30th, 2008 at 3:05 am

These are fantastically scary. Out of them all approx 8 of them scared me as a child. Only the spiders still scare me now. Well done!

  62. 62 Žarko Apr 30th, 2008 at 3:06 am

Really amazing. The girl’s face expression is fully pro on some pics. Grat job!

  63. 63 david Apr 30th, 2008 at 3:29 am

These pictures are slick, but very dark and disturbing. I don’t like them.

  64. 64 maya Apr 30th, 2008 at 4:34 am

i like this. the greatest works of art came out of pain and fears…. beauty itself too…. it is always better to confront it, and make it material, then let it live and endlessly involve our imagination… i like this work, specially going down to basement, and the last one… congratulations

  65. 65 Chris Hansen Apr 30th, 2008 at 6:24 am

“You are sick or summat for getting that girl to pose partially naked for your pics, call that art?”

Dave I think we may need to have a little chat. Why don’t you take a seat….

  66. 66 Samantha Apr 30th, 2008 at 6:24 am

i must wonder what kind of childhood you had
    these are sick
    i dont find this art
    to create these pictures?
    i see not the point
the quailty of the pictures ill give you creadit for
    but these are pretty sick

    xxxsam

  67. 67 Sharon Apr 30th, 2008 at 7:07 am

wow, great pictures…I think my fear of spiders just came back!

  68. 68 Z Apr 30th, 2008 at 7:09 am

Nice images. They triggered interesting responses in my brain about fear and the childhood imagination.

    Z

  69. 69 Kim Apr 30th, 2008 at 7:09 am

Those are great! Funny thing is, I never had childhood fears and even used to draw images like this as a kid without much emotion (just for the art), but since I have kids myself, those suddenly creep me out big deal!
Well done and the girl really acts great!

  70. 70 Brad Apr 30th, 2008 at 7:10 am

Brilliant work. Love them all. Monsters really do live in closets

  71. 71 Lord Matt Apr 30th, 2008 at 7:18 am

Very scary and slightly macabre. Nicely set up though.

All I can say is the wolf on the stairs – aaaaaaaaaaaaagh… (!)

  72. 72 Robert Apr 30th, 2008 at 7:19 am

Samantha, you don’t see the point in representing some of the most powerful emotions people experience in their lives (childhood fear) in some artistic medium? Let me rephrase that, you don’t see the point in art?

Also, the half naked girl is supposed to stick out as a representation of the helpless feeling of a childhood fear. If you think it’s sexual you should stay away from children.

  73. 73 Hib3 Apr 30th, 2008 at 7:30 am

    Wow, what an imagination. Brilliant!

  74. 74 Ghirarda Apr 30th, 2008 at 7:41 am

    Fortissime queste immagini!!!

  75. 75 KN9 Apr 30th, 2008 at 8:01 am

What’s fun is that some people assume that you have to have a sick or weird childhood to think up stuff like this. My childhood was pretty nice and I get a kick out of these (a kick and some sympathy… I still scare myself thinking there’s some horrible thing waiting for me in the dark before I turn the light on)–and I like to imagine and write similar stuff. It reminds me of something Stephen King wrote–namely, how interviewers liked to try and pin why he wrote horror on some childhood trauma. Ultimately he just gave the answer, “I have the heart of a little boy; I keep it in a jar on my desk.”

  76. 76 Andy Apr 30th, 2008 at 8:20 am

They are repulsive. They are capturing terror and inciting it at the same time. Technically they are masterpieces. I don’t particularly “like” them. I suspect you weren’t trying for a popularity contest.

I do believe these really reflect the fears of some children. It reminds of how adults sometimes forget to realize children are emotionally extreme as they are sorting out how to behave. This doesn’t mean they were abused necessarily. Kids are just extreme versions of adults. Their emotions, their reactions, and their ability to read the emotions of others often take on extreme tones. If you have a child, you probably know what I mean. If you don’t have children, read a book about child development.

I don’t think the infant has fears like the older kids so that one could have been left out. Maybe someone’s done research to prove me wrong, but I’m not aware of anything that shows infants experience “fear” in the same way older children do.

To your detractors, Folks, lighten up. No harm was done. You sound like a member of the Taliban when get mortally upset about a simple image. If you don’t understand why it’s art, that’s fair. However, if you don’t understand how a car works are you going to admit it in public and write General Motors to stop making cars? Go away and do your homework.

  77. 77 r a Apr 30th, 2008 at 9:12 am

these are excellent! some of the best i have seen. goosebumps everytime i scrolled down.the fact that these were staged in real life and not collaged in photoshop is amazing. I bet this was alot of fun.

  78. 78 Lucy Apr 30th, 2008 at 9:51 am

These are excellent- my favourite is the one with the child and the wolf on the stairs. I work with binaural audio and create walks sometimes with the theme of horror or a murder mystery. Great stuff!

  79. 79 stephanie Apr 30th, 2008 at 10:00 am

these are SOOOO amazing. i love them. i just stumbled this site and, WOW. i love things like this and…just…i soound like a retard, but, i can’t tell you how awesome these are in words. GREAT JOB!!!!

  80. 80 Walt Apr 30th, 2008 at 10:12 am

These pictures really create a strong fear or memory. Their actually really good.

The monster under the bed one – we all remember that.

    Great work!

  81. 81 Ronelle Apr 30th, 2008 at 10:30 am

The little girl going downstairs with the evil dude underneath, that was always my fear. To this day, I always run up the stairs at my parents house because I feel like something is going to grab me.

  82. 82 Kuba Apr 30th, 2008 at 11:52 am

i wish I could do sth like this…

    Great!

  83. 83 Julius Apr 30th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Andy, that’s hilarious about the cars. Anyway, these are really good. They remind me of Bacon’s “Screaming Popes” in how they invoke so much from the viewer. Psychological art is really intriguing.

  84. 84 Me Apr 30th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

Wow.. really amazing. I love the one of the stairs, now I’m going to have to run up and down my basement stairs like I did when I was little. lol

This reminds me of when I was little and the fears I had, reminds me that I have to take my kids more seriously when they’re afraid of the boogey man. He seemed so real to me, how we forget…

  85. 85 Maisie Apr 30th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

wow that is really well done, really creepy though…

  86. 86 ishmot Apr 30th, 2008 at 1:12 pm

    Freak!

  87. 87 Cris Apr 30th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

These kids are gonna be traumatized. but awesome pics nonetheless

  88. 88 cKHAVIKk Apr 30th, 2008 at 1:40 pm

the clown image made me throw up in my mouth a little bit….

  89. 89 dan Apr 30th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Absolutely stunning…I was a very imaginative child so some of these are so creepily similar to things I have imagined.

  90. 90 leviathin Apr 30th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

you are my hero.me and my friend love to think of stuff like this but you are a master at your craft i dont know you but i love you.you are an amazing artist please do more ^_^
oh and it is also apparent that some people are incapable of appreciating art and feel the need to share with us their possible fears or fantasies of innapropriate behaviour with the kiddies

  91. 91 Dave Apr 30th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Amanda, stick to watching TV if you are going to be so closed minded to art.

    Sheesh.

Regarding the illustrations above: absolutely fantastic..

  92. 92 Angie. Apr 30th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Ah. If I was one of those kids, I would have peed my pants.
These are so excellent. The quality and emotions…Wow.

I am pretty sure 90% of these were my fears as a child. And still are, maybe I should stop watching horror movies so much. Hah.

The little kid in the mirror, that is so dumb to complain about. It’s only pervy if YOU yourself view kids that way. I mean, when I was a kid, I hated wearing clothes, I saw no problem in being in just underpants. Anyways, even if an ADULT is naked, it doesn’t make it sexual.

  93. 93 Rachael Apr 30th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

Nice! these are so creepy and some of these were things i was afraid of as a kid.

My biggest fear was a skeleton that lived at the end of my bed that wore a top hat and cuff links and if i kept my feet uncovered at night, he might tickle me…

  94. 94 Jeremy Apr 30th, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I dont know how this landed on my computer, but i was completely and utterly disgusted. Very disturbing images, but in a way exactly what i imagined as a child. Good art, bad feeling.

  95. 95 tylor rose Apr 30th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

these photos are very well done, and I found a few of them to be particularly so. The boy with the bunny and the gasmask especially.

One thing that’s pissing me off to no end is the suppositions people are making about the artist. It may strike some of you as completely fucking novel, but you don’t have to have a god awful childhood or be a mental case to produce art. I don’t know a goddamn thing about the author or their childhood, but the idiocy of assuming anything about the artist’s consciousness simply from what is probably a small sample of their art is almost as striking as the photos themselves.

Grow up, a lot of you.

  96. 96 Eirc Apr 30th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Quote:”It really makes you wonder what kind of childhood the author of these pictures must have had.

maybe it’s a person that is just fascinated my the child mind and they wanted to do there best to reproduce what they thinks the child may be thinking when they feel scared of something. i also think the images show a lot more detail then a child mind would comprehend. perhaps it’s a touch of the artist them self.

  97. 97 Mark Apr 30th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

VERY impressive work. Visceral, frightening, gorgeous.

  98. 98 Jeane Apr 30th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

You are my Stephen King of the photo world. These photos are amazing, fascinating, and somewhat terrifying. I love feeling all of these things and that is why you are my new favorite hero.

I don’t see just fear, but humor and innocence too. The one where the little girl has the flashlight and is screaming at the thing coming out of the floor who is screaming (back?) just makes me crack up. In the picture of the little girl in a red dress standing on a carpet of skulls makes me want to cry to see her innocence. Although we don’t see her face I don’t feel fear from this picture, I don’t even feel curiosity, just her checking things out:

I see you… ohhh what is that?

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love these. Thank you for sharing :)

  99. 99 Kelly Apr 30th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

You’re obviously going to get a lot of criticism on this series. Just remember that’s only because the vast majority of people are far too generic and prefer scenic pictures of sunsets. Truly, these are unique and magnificent photographs. With the abundance of such boring art, it’s very refreshing to come across something as haunting and creative as this. Very well done.

  100. 100 questionableethics Apr 30th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Having these young children pose in these situations for “fun” borders on child abuse. Perhaps you should use photoshop, instead of subjecting these young children to your darkest fears.

  101. 101 Gee Apr 30th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Wow, this is great. I love the style, reminds me of Creepshow 1 and 2. Freaky shit that i used to see when i was younger.

    Much Appreciated

  102. 102 billdave May 1st, 2008 at 9:50 am

Very cool. Very insightful. As for whether kids are traumatized by posing for the photos; think of youself as a kid, remember that a photoshoot includes watching your aunt or neighbor dress like halloween and put chocosyrup for blood and then take shot after shot togetehr while the photographer says “try to look scared” and you try not to giggle. Doesn’t it sound like one of the cololest and funnest and most memorable days of a childhood? And mightn’t it actually help a kid to see the theater and nonsense behind scary images, to be able to be part of the show?
Great photos, primal and moving. Thanks.

  103. 103 Jer May 1st, 2008 at 9:55 am

Whats up with the half naked little girls? Just because you put some spiders in the picture doesn’t make it ok to tell a little girl to take her clothing off so you can take pictures for your just for fun collection.

  104. 104 DaveIsRight May 1st, 2008 at 11:36 am

What the guy Dave said is right, about the little girl in the mirror. It’s absolutely unnecessary for her to be unclothed. It’s borderline child pornography. You can’t rationalize or justify her being nearly naked with the normal childhood changing of clothes. Put a nightgown on her and you still get the same horrified little girl and the same terror effect. It’s just inappropriate.

Awesome work, however. I had many fears that are depicted in your works. Excellent job!!

  105. 105 Gore May 1st, 2008 at 1:19 pm

You’re kidding me right? People are actually worried about the fact that there is a half naked little girl? Get a hold of yourself people, no ones forcing you to like, look, or even enjoy these pieces, but don’t get on your high horse and make accusations of pedophilia. I don’t know about you but when I wake up in the middle of the night thinking there’s a monster coming out of my closet, I’m not exactly all dolled up to spend a night on the town. Shut up and stop being so critical of someone else’s mind also. I sure as hell don’t come into where you work and tell you how to do your job. Show a little respect.

  106. 106 t5 May 1st, 2008 at 2:06 pm

    fear is for idiots

  107. 107 Ana May 1st, 2008 at 3:02 pm

You have here some pretty creepy stuff. In the good way, of course. Though I could never see these pictures home alone (and I’m already grown up), I believe I have to congratule you for that: it means you can really put “life” in your photographies and enrich them. I would never say these are “just” pictures because when I look at them I feel something very strong, and that’s incredible, seriously.
Congratulations, you have a great work here. The 7th and 8th are probably the ones that scare the hell out of me, but the 2nd is also somewhat disturbing.
They frighten me but I can’t stop looking at them. Fascinating.

  108. 108 jay May 1st, 2008 at 3:08 pm

wow.. i was looking at those images and i was thinking ‘boring’.. but then i saw that one with the child in bed and the.. mother or whatever with her mouth wide open and bugs everywhere.. something weird happened to me,i swear i felt WEIRD.. for a second, as if my body had no mass and as if i moved a step away from my eyes, like something was inside me looking through them.. holy crap that was an insane feeling.. like the ‘me’ inside my body moved 3 cm away from it, heck..

looks like that was one of my chilhood fears.. if not the biggest one

has anyone felt something like this? its awesome…

  109. 109 Sarah May 1st, 2008 at 3:19 pm

    Wow wow wow!
Those photos are amazing! Really true to what the title is!
I have always been a bit of a wimp throughout my childhood scared of people in my wardrobe etc!
N to be honest i am still like that now! But looking at these really captures the fear that most children have n makes me realise im not the only one!
There is one photo which nearly made me cry n its the clown one! I have been petrified of clowns since a early age haven’t a clue what set it off but even now at 22 i still scared to death of them!!!

Im so glad you put it behind the sheet as that is scary enough!!
But one thing im in my house by myself n now im a lil bit too scared to go downstairs!!

(n to the above comments! children scared after posing for these pics i dont think so! it would be so much fun to pose for them pics except clown one of course! Halloween with the big kids thats all it is!)

  110. 110 MEEM May 1st, 2008 at 3:22 pm

that is just disgusting its not nic funny or cool its just weird and ucky! yech! eww! :(

  111. 111 Peter May 1st, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Photoshopped. By whick I mean… adjusting colour and contrast? They are integral parts of a picture. Adjusting them, and it is no longer true photography.

  112. 112 Morgan May 1st, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Excellent photos! I hate it when ignorant people trash other people’s art. And only perverts would look at the image of the little girl and infer anything sexual.

  113. 113 dodos de la cruz May 1st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

    wow
111 that scared me a lot…better than any stephen king thing…reallt scary…great work.

  114. 114 Emily May 1st, 2008 at 7:56 pm

I love these pictures…they’re so scary, and completely bring me back to my own childhood fears.

As for the people who are screaming about pedophilia, I think there’s something wrong with society when the minute someone takes a picture of a partially clothed child, it’s considered abuse. It is absolutely clear that these are NOT sexual pictures…the child is not even pictured in a sexual way. Nudity does not equal sexuality…it is a completely natural state. That some peoples’ minds automatically turn to accusations of abuse when they see a child in the manner pictured is a sad comment on how far we’ve let ourselves go as a society. A naked child is not an abused child.

  115. 115 Hillery May 1st, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Childhood fears? I still have some of these bad boys, plus more from the perspective of a parent, plus ones that are missing (where are the ghosts? where’s the long, dark hallway between your bedroom and the bathroom?). I’m not saying I constantly live in fear- more that I tend to imagine a lot of things, and sometimes get carried away. I think the comments from some people that they never had fears as a child are very interesting. I wouldn’t be too quick to brag about something like that. It makes it sound as though they either have no imagination or live where the sun shines 24/7. Either way, it seems a loss. As for the little girl in her underwear- I was interested to see the argument for and against in the comments never seemed to mention what seems obvious to me- The girl’s nakedness accentuates her vulnerability. Just like tucking your head under the covers protects you from the monsters, being naked makes you more vulnerable. It doesn’t make sense from a practical standpoint, but I know for a fact all children think like this. I assumed the artist’s choice in this case was to accentuate the fear of being exposed in that situation. Just my thought.

  116. 116 paishin May 1st, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Amazing photography, great concept. Its impossible to look at these photos without causing you a full range of emotions. Each photo is so unique, detailed, masterfully performed that draws you in a magical world of imagination. The fact that it causes fear or disgust to many in the above replies is proof enough for this and yes this absolutely is art.

  117. 117 jhsiv4 May 1st, 2008 at 9:15 pm

“Stumbled” on this. Well done and gruesome. Many of the viewers should go read “Grimms’ Fairy Tales” from the early 19th century, based on ancient folk tales — many are gruesome also.
The partial clothing conveys vulnerability — or, at least, it did in my dreams as a child — and deepens the horror.

  118. 118 dex May 2nd, 2008 at 3:30 am

really scary stuff. i love the first one!

  119. 119 Mike May 2nd, 2008 at 8:20 am

I am pretty impressed. Some of the images do look like there is photoshopping in them. The creature behind the fridge for instance doesn’t look like it was a model. Never the less.. these images are really great. That takes a lot of talent and creativity.

  120. 120 Larissa May 2nd, 2008 at 10:23 am

The photographic art is superb, the concept brave and excellent.
But I wouldn’t show them to my youngest son aged 9; my 14 year old would love them though!
And that’s really the point: some images, books, music, drinks, ideas are for adults only as we can cope with them (broadly speaking!).
These photos are a representation of childhood imaginative fears through the filter of adulthood, so we process them according to our own maturity.
And a child wearing a pair of knickers is just that: a child wearing a pair of knickers; if you think it’s paedophilic mention it to your therapist…

  121. 121 adam May 2nd, 2008 at 11:05 am

i think everyone is reading to much into it i think they are hilariously funny! everyone thought about things like that in one way or another. good work keep them coming!

  122. 122 Larissa May 2nd, 2008 at 1:12 pm

3 words — HOLY FREAKIN’ COW!!!!!! Fantastic work! Keep it up, man.

  123. 123 Leah May 2nd, 2008 at 5:20 pm

OMG YOU ARE AMAZING!!! This is what I do! Except mine is on photoshop!!!

  124. 124 paul May 2nd, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Love the pics, really takes be back. Can`t wait to go to sleep and have some inspired dreams.

  125. 125 Woody May 2nd, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Well, thanks a lot! You can just come over and ROCK me to sleep tonight.

  126. 126 brandon carbaugh May 2nd, 2008 at 11:14 pm

To be honest, some of these fall flat, but that’s only relative to how brilliant the rest are. I think I might have liked to see one with more emphasis on the dark; basement after 5:00 anyone?

  127. 127 Jill May 2nd, 2008 at 11:32 pm

Stunning work, very well done and VERY creepy! I can tell you and the models had a lot of fun shooting these. Don’t mind the naysayers, they’d rather whine about how they don’t understand something than bother to even try to come up with anything as creative and original as these photos.

As for the girl in her underwear, so what? Obviously she is in the process of getting dressed, as she is heading to her closet only to discover a monster in there. So of course she’d be in her underwear. The people who are screaming “pedophile!” over this are the ones with sick minds that need serious help. My 4-year-old son is naked in the house all the livelong day (we do put clothes on him when anyone who’s not family comes over, just to be prudent), and if you dared tell me that I was abusing him by letting him be naked, I’d look at you like you had three heads. What a sad, perverse world we live in!

  128. 128 BJ May 2nd, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Very haunting and breath-taking. Excellent work.

  129. 129 Amy May 3rd, 2008 at 5:28 am

I stumbled this one too, and I don’t normally leave comments but these are amazingly well done. Aside from the basic aesthetics, which are great on their own, the creature and nightmare creations are brilliant. Long arms, large jaws and no eyes comprised my childhood idea of monster, and in still strike a little fear. And to those commenting on the authors mental state, what kind of blandness incarnate woke you’re house hold at 3:00am?

  130. 130 scboxer May 3rd, 2008 at 5:59 am

Well, great art is supposed to evoke emotions. And I would say you definitely
accomplised that, judging from the reactions on here!
Disgust, fear, humor…I’d say you’ve covered the bases.
    Well done!
Personally, I was creeped out and fascinated at the same time. The quality of your work
    is excellent.

As for the little girl in the mirror, the first thing I thought was that it was cool
of you to have her arms crossed over her chest like an adult would do.
So to all you freaks that saw something sexual in that picture–Get help please!

Emily put it best by saying the partially clothed child as opposed to
the partially nude child. It’s all in the eye of the beholder as they say…

  134. 134 Ken May 3rd, 2008 at 1:46 pm

You did a great job some I could relate to.

  135. 135 jane May 3rd, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Although some pieces seem to have things placed in them, I really like this series. Actually, viewing it made me wish some of these were my childhood fears so that I could get a stronger reaction.

However, the clown one looks like an exact replica of a scene from Stephen King’s It. Pennywise the clown was standing in a kid’s yard behind the sheet so you could only see his silhouette, although I don’t remember if he was holding balloons at the time. But the shape behind the sheet even looks like Pennywise’s shape; I thought it was a still from the movie at first.

As for those complaining about the clothing issue, for a long time nakedness has been a way to express purity and innocence. After all, people are never purer than when they’re just born, and babies are delivered naked. That’s why you see people in the media who are reborn or new or something like that naked (the only example that springs to mind is Terminator 3 the girl is naked when she first gets there right?). So the reason for the little girl to be less clothed could be to juxtapose the innocence of a child’s mind and the darkness that it conjures up.

  136. 136 issues-in-e-minor May 3rd, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Wow. These are amazing. Some of them I like more than others. The one with the “thing under the bed” OMG. My heart just about jumped out of my chest and my skin crawled. I’m still afraid of the dark and sleep with a night light to this day, lol. I’m 39. I never thought about it but I guess I’m still afraid of the “thing under the bed” because I usually prefer to have my mattresses directly on the floor and not on a frame. Wow. Never really thought about that before. AND I can’t sleep unless my closet door is all the way open or all the way closed. If it’s only open a couple of inches, I can’t stand it, lol. These are just amazing. Oddly enough, there’s something therapeutic about seeing a horribly scary image and going “that’s it! that’s what’s in my head!!” It’s like it dissipates some of its power over you to be able to actually SEE it with your eyes and not just your mind.

  137. 137 William May 3rd, 2008 at 7:40 pm

These picture are terrific, I loved the art direction on the props/sets. I felt as if I was looking into a world similar to what Tim Burton creates in his films. The Monsters were just the scariest things I have seen in a long time. As I think someone has already mention I was too fascinated and terrified at the same time. I gotta say my favorite was the hands coming out from under the bed, used to have nightmares a child about that one. lol Keep up the good work!!

  138. 138 Egl Bunny May 3rd, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Thank you so much for these. They are positively astounding in beauty and quality. I completely understand your point for these pictures. My fears as a young child were much, much worse. The monsters I imagined lingering around corners would put those monsters in your work to shame, lol. Thank you again. You and your talent are wonderful.

  139. 139 Quinn May 3rd, 2008 at 8:38 pm

wow this realy amazing great photography, XD

  140. 140 Aleigh May 3rd, 2008 at 11:35 pm

These images are absolutely stunning. I feel that the artist perfectly captured the terror and helplessness that only deep seated, irrational fears can provoke.

Andy – that comment is perfection. More people need to realize that what they enjoy and understand doesn’t mandate the rest of the world. Some people are so short-sighted.

  141. 141 I am me May 3rd, 2008 at 11:58 pm

Dude jay i just wanted to say i feel like that constantly and it wont go away so it gets anoyying after awile

just stop that isnt what this replay thing is for…

  142. 142 thoughtprovoking May 4th, 2008 at 4:01 am

great images, some truly twisted ones, i liked the gas mask one with bunny having a mask too.
to everyone bickering about the images, surley the artist behind them meant these images to be controvesial.
i just hope the kids done see the end products.

  143. 143 Moi May 4th, 2008 at 8:39 am

I read and read and there were too many comments to see if this had already been addressed…the photo’s are AMAZING my only worry is of that little girl… I just hope she isn’t scared in the dark because she took part in these pictures…..

  144. 144 Steff May 4th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

    Dude….wicked

  145. 145 kristy May 4th, 2008 at 1:15 pm

Tim Burton ought to shake your hand- you truly have a gift of inspiring emotion and you display an imagination of pure genius. Congress hails that pornography is something that has no artistic merit- this is not pornographic- the young girl being half naked is no pornographic- she is performing no sexual acts and is not posed in a lewd manner- and furthermore by posing in these pictures this little girl is probably more convinced how fake and silly such awful fears are- do you think Dakota Fanning is “abused” too??? oh that’s right, you negative commentators (dave, samantha, amanda) you don’t think, and you don’t know what you are talking about. I do, and there is nothing pornographic about these photos. Oh yeah, I’m pro-choice too:-) put that in your pipe and smoke it

  146. 146 vincent.malloy May 4th, 2008 at 1:31 pm

these pics make me feel like coming home!

  147. 147 qazaq May 4th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Very well done, your ideas seem to come from childhood experiences – although I pray not the experiences seen in the surrealism that I see depicted. The “daddy no,” the wolf chasing the girl, the monster finding the helpless pantied girl, the pervert under the stairs, even the monster under the bed – and the death of a mother must truly be the most horrifying of all. Reaching over, in the comfort of bed, to find a dead mother, being eaten by cockroaches. This is truly the photography of nightmare. I can’t say I ever feared my mother being raped and murdered, nor an abusive father – these things can truly cause people to come to an understanding with their fears – to understand how they work.

I really liked the head in the refrigerator – I was appalled at the head on the platter at first – thinking about what it would be like to open it and expect something good to eat – and find a head (of perhaps a family member) in there, with someone having the intent of eating it – then I noticed the crouching male figure to the right. Truly horrifying…

The artist must truly understand what makes fear tick – and understanding is conquering.

  148. 148 Renae May 4th, 2008 at 2:31 pm

These are amazing. Great imagination and creativity. For all the pussies that complained…it’s ART and therefore open to many interpretations, just enjoy them.

  149. 149 Jen May 4th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

    These are really art.
However, I feel this needs to be said: Nobody implied that the half-naked girls were anything sexual, but ethically it is a bit sketchy to have the girls only in their panties. It’s not good for those girls to be taught at that age that its okay for them to let people take pictures of them with their clothes off, because even though this guy didn’t there are people that will take advantage of them.
But the controversy is part of what makes this art, it really is an amazing work of art.

  150. 150 on broken wings May 4th, 2008 at 8:58 pm

wow people actually like photoshopped kiddie porn

  151. 151 Helen May 4th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Loved these pics! Second time I’ve stumbled them and I can’t wait to show my 16 yr old daughter who loves this kind of visual as I do. Scary? Absolutely! Very much reminded me of my own fears as a child.
Hard to believe some of these folks never had any of these fears… hard to believe as in I don’t think they’re being honest.
And the little girl in her bedroom staring into the mirror? Never even thought twice about her being only in her panties, it just seemed so completely part of the picture. Whoever thinks there is something “off” there, no. There’s something “off” with you.
And for heavens sake, why would the model be scared or scarred for that matter when she’s seen the process of make-up, props, lighting, etc. The child KNOWS it’s fake.
Wonderful, wonderful work. Can’t wait to see more of anything you do!

  152. 152 Helioprogenus May 4th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

What an amazing representation of our childhood fears. The fertile grounds for human imagination never cease to amaze me, but what completely blows my mind is the artistic talent and skill involved in depicting those scenarios so realistically and with all their gloriously terrifying attributes.

For those who like to negatively and derisively comment on these pictures, I suppose their opinions seem to matter to them, but because they lack the artistic talent involved, and their inner need to destroy the creativity of others, coupled with a fragile self esteem should be seen as empty meaningless drivel from untalented simpletons.

  153. 153 blueboat May 5th, 2008 at 6:37 am

The forth one down actually happened to me… I was about 4-5 and i could feel something on my bed (while I was sleeping) but I ignored it, until I felt it on my stomach so i sat up and looked and this HUGE spider was crawling up it. After that I got scared of the open end of the quilt lol

  154. 154 alex May 5th, 2008 at 6:40 am

Not everything that can be made should be made …. who do you adress by this? what do they contribute meanigful? … they are just a disturbing eyecatcher. Also i would be worried that you cause your little children or brother and sister to get realy childhood nightmares…you wont reach anything with this and i think humanity is better of without this stuff…

  155. 155 Reijard May 5th, 2008 at 9:13 am

    Amazing! really amazing…

  156. 156 MbO May 5th, 2008 at 10:43 am

Alex… humanity is better off without ignorant morons who believe they have the right to act as the mouthpiece for the entire six billion strong human race on subjects of which they understand nothing.

Anyway, the completely ridiculous overreactions to these mediocre pictures demonstrates something far more scary than the subject material itself. You people (I’m generalising here based on the saccharine sentimentality of most of the posts) must have lived some sheltered closeted lives to be actually ‘scared’ by these cartoonish photoshop images. They *are* photoshop images btw.

The colours are garish and bright and the subject matter is stupid and cliched, leaving nothing to the imagination. They would be far more scary if they were darker and more indistinct, like the images from a nightmare invariably are.

Those hands coming out from under the sofa look like something from sesame goddamn street for chrissakes or does the cookie monster scare you?!!!?

  157. 157 Blisster May 5th, 2008 at 12:29 pm

I found your work to be most captivating. The subject matter and quality of the work is outstanding! Gotta love stumbleupon because without it I would never have found your page. Please keep me informed of any future updates!

  158. 158 cookiemonster May 5th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

wow, MbO. speaking of overreactions…..a bit ironic, no?
but you managed to throw in some words with 4 syllables, thereby effectively setting yourself apart from those “ignorant morons” you spoke of, and you only barely exposed immensity of your insecurity issues in the process. thank God we have mediocre minds like yours to put those cliched bastards in their places.

  159. 159 eye of the beholder May 5th, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Hey EATMEAMANDA, why dont you go f**K yourself….. Amanda has the right to express herself just like everyone else on this board… Oh, I see… Only you and people who agree with your point of view are only allowed to comment but those who have opposing view that differ from yours basically you are saying they have no right to be critical… What a hypocrite you freakin nut job…. Everyone has the right to their view on these pictures and just because you dont care for their critique doesnt give you a right to tell someone to go F$#k themselves.
you are nothing but an egotistical maniac…… what a jackass you are…………

  160. 160 gretak May 5th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

What bothered me the most was the terror on the little girl’s face with the wolf. My first thought was “what did they do to make her look that frightened?” and then “how is she going to deal with this in the future”. Now my rational brain is back and I think these photos are beautiful. The first one with the baby in particular. In my profession I’ve dealt with more dead babies than dead mothers but the sadness and pain is very acute for me. Yet this is a lovely photo. It brings to mind the photos that were taken of the dead in the late 19th and early 20th century.
When I saw the girl in the mirror I thought, “oh no people are going to have a problem with that one.” Remember, the child with the spider and the girl on the stairs is also in her underwear.

  161. 161 Kimsan May 5th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

Oh these are wonderful. I do recognise many of them as my own… some of them still are actually.

  162. 162 Kate May 6th, 2008 at 8:53 am

These are amazing. I’m sure I’ll have nightmares tonight but it’ll definately be worth it.

  163. 163 dementia? May 6th, 2008 at 12:42 pm

I bet that little girls going to have dementia.
naked men jump out at her and her naked picture is on the internet at the age of what, six?
I know the parents might not think anything of it, but there are some fucked up people in the world now.

  164. 164 Wendy May 6th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

wow. some of them were very creepy! 8.5 out of 10! awesome! i hope that there are more! i really enjoyed them!

  165. 165 Joe May 6th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

What?!?!?!?! Children’s fear is to find their mothers dead, their insides eaten out by cockroaches and spiders? I must be a strange child not to experience that fear.

  166. 166 Amber May 6th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

Yeah, this stuff really freaked my shit! I couldn’t even make it all of the way through! A lot of these really played on fears that I had as a child, and some that I still have at the age of 29. I don’t know that Amanda was bashing anyone with her comment/question. I’m somewhat intrigued by the PERSON and what’s in their head to be able to come up with this stuff. Just, Wow!

  167. 167 Thor Petersen May 7th, 2008 at 7:17 am

Especially the monster under the stairway is creepy. I still fear something is behind me, when i watch really scary movies.

  168. 168 dude May 7th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Great work! It’s really unfortunate how the whole “comments” thing brings out all the jerks. I just read some of the comments, and, come on, do you really believe the child is gonna be “messed up” because of this? a lot of child actors must have really gone crazy then. The whole process of applying the make up and creating the props helps the child realize it’s not true, thus eliminating these fears. And the “oh gosh, that child is naked!” comments were really the worst. People, there are pedophiles and creeps everywhere, we know, but do you really think they get their kicks out of these photos? if you’re worried about that you’re probably worrying about children going to the beach “exposing” themselves. don’t be silly!
I don’t usually comment this kind of stuff, but I got a little pissed off and had to vent somehow.
once again, great work, and I’d just like to say, as a personnal opinion, maybe you should aim for a more “natural” look, go easy on the color and contrast adjustments, sometimes a little imperfection actually looks good.

  169. 169 Sam May 7th, 2008 at 1:04 pm

interesting photos. It took me a while to get the one with the dead mother. But now that I think about it, its simply the fear of having ur mother die when ur a child, and the spiders simply make the idea of a dead mother even scarier. Genious.

  170. 170 sharkattackwally May 7th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Really love these. I’m not really into photography. I know very little and very little captures me but this really does. It embodies ideas the human psyche can completely emphasise with. Each picture has the artists signature as well. Well done.

  171. 171 Pamela May 7th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

These are really creepy and a great portrayal of fears.

Why people care about topless children I just don’t understand. I guess they just want to find something to whine about.

Also, to those who didn’t like the dead mother one, as graphic as it is it’s not real in the end. It’s art, and I believe that picture does a really good job of capturing some nightmares I had about losing my parents when I was a little girl!

  172. 172 Karl Hungus May 7th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

    Those are absolutely terrific!

  173. 173 Phil May 7th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Children’s fairytales have always been graphic and disturbingly dark. These pictures brilliantly and beautifully evoke and represent the fear these tales were designed to evoke.

  174. 174 C77 May 7th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

First,Incredibly true piece of art you did.
Second, amazingly how this is true, those are all fears of little childrens.
Third,sh*t,you actually reminded me of my fears when I was a kid…
    Bad boy!!!

    Great art! Absolutelly fantastic!!!

  175. 175 Karl Hungus May 7th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Reading over the comments, I find it odd that people are commenting how disturbing a childhood the photographer must have had, which I find absolutely ridiculous. Have you had no childhoods yourselves? Nightmares are a part of every child’s life, and they can manifest themselves without any outside ‘horror’ influences or truamatic experiences. You see, healthy children have amazing imaginations, and their subconscious can conjure up some very scary things.

For me, one of the earliest nightmares I can recall was of Goofy (Yes, the Disney cartoon character) chasing me. Of course, I laugh about that now, but it was scary. Any of the nightmares I’ve had a a child wasn’t the result of any truama, or an abusive childhood. As I was growing up, I was afraid of the dark, I was afraid of monsters, and all kinds of things. It’s a part of our lives.

Some of these pictures are absolutely fascinating as such.

And so what if these pictures are photoshopped? Digital art is still art, and it takes considerable skill. Believe me, I’ve been using photoshop for years, and I couldn’t create anything as vivid as this, but I applaud anyone who can.

  176. 176 Elise May 7th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

    WOW!
I think the last one is my favorite, but they’re all incredible- and they look like tons of fun to create.
    Great work.

  177. 177 Sanjid May 8th, 2008 at 1:30 am

Fantastically awesome works! Truly terrifying, specially no.1,3,4,5,9,11,13,14 and 15 are excellent! Keep your good work buddy!

  178. 178 judgmental much? May 8th, 2008 at 2:30 am

As an adult, the thing I find scariest is just how judgmental some people can be. As to the idea that they aren’t “true photography” if you alter the image after the shutter has clicked – pish! Have you never heard of burning in, tinting, cropping and so on? Kudos to Josh.

  179. 179 Sharon S. (Massachusetts ~ USA) May 8th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

I still can’t sleep with a leg or hand dangling over the side of my bed. Freaks me out! I also remember as a kid screaming at the top of my lungs for my Daddy or Mommy from the safety of my bedsheet tent whenever there was a bee or hornet in my room.
I absolutely can’t sleep if there is a spider on my ceiling for fear that while I’m asleep it will crawl on down into my open mouth or my ear or worse, bite me with it’s enormous hairy fangs.
And one other common fear is walking up from the dark basement thinking that some monster is lurking and going to chase me or grab me and drag me back down.

As for the art, it’s techically phenomenal and provokes the mind to remember it’s hidden fears.
Perhaps the artist should contact said Stephen King to illustrate some of his stories.

Best wishes talented artist Joshua Hoffine!
    Sharon

What a terrible life you must have led when you were kids!!!

Great pictures, technically, but so sick!

  181. 181 Libintador May 9th, 2008 at 4:38 am

Whoa! These pictures are nerve-wracking! I could entertain the concept of monsters under the bed,but i applaud you for definitely making the imagination as “true” as imagery can go! Kudos!

  182. 182 Sam May 9th, 2008 at 11:21 am

I think people who call these images sick or pedophilia are so closed minded, and subsequently are anti-social because they don’t cherish or respect that different people have different views and ideas.

  183. 183 diablita May 10th, 2008 at 4:04 am

Nice work! I find the comments that result just as amazing as the pictures themselves.

No one who is in their right mind would look at the child in her panties in a sexual manner. I find it disturbing that such a thing would cross someone’s mind enough for them to comment on it. The little boy in the gas mask is also stripped down…why has no one commented on that being inappropriate?

Also, I can’t help but wonder what the reaction to these photos would have been thirty years ago…or fifty? We have grown so accustomed to seeing gore and violence that simple things like this fail to stimulate the imagination of many. Not much shock value left for us, I surmise.

I think the photos are captivating, so say the least. Most favorite is the spider with the baby…so peaceful yet to someone like myself with arachnophobia, I can’t help but squirm. Ick!

Love the gas mask…a childhood fear that I never had to experience.

And who still doesn’t get the creeps after watching a not-completely-terrible horror film?

Very nicely done!! In case that point hasn’t yet been made. :)

take care, i might be your adult nightmare!!! ha!

  187. 187 KT May 10th, 2008 at 9:29 am

It really annoys me that people would rather write something shitty about the Photographer or his choice in props/actors/costumes etc than to just go somewhere else, why do people find it difficult to just move on without leaving a nasty comment?

I say, “If you haven’t got anything good to say, don’t say anything at all!” :) But anyway, I really enjoyed these photographs, you’ve managed to capture the childhood imagination brilliantly, i wish i had the tools to make my own :)
are there anymore Photos in the pipe line? I would love to be a model for one :)

Take care, don’t let the bed bugs bite lol

very very nice work id really like them all but didnt understand the two last ones and i think that the pic of the clown like it is more like a cliche about clowns jajaja but the ones that creeps me out it was the mom layin on her bed with her daughter creepy and disturbing that was my fear when i was little and still does it but well ver nice work and dont let some idiots tell you about the little girls its not the girls what you are seeing its the fear in her faces so if you are looking at the little girls and why they are half naked i think the sick ones are the others very great work really i mean it ok bye

  189. 189 amy May 10th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

OMFG!! I loved it!!! GREAT work!!!!!!!!!!

  190. 190 Kylie May 10th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Two comments: Firstly – amazing collection and truly reflective of that manic sort of fear that children experience. I still remember being literally paralysed with fear in my bed at night with my heart beating so fast I thought it would jump out of my chest. My worst childhood fear wasn’t depicted here though – more so than fearing the monster under the bed, I would see dark shadowy shapes moving around the walls, corners and ceilings, never being quite able to make out what they were and being much too afraid to close my eyes.

Secondly – as an adult, I’m afraid I saw something much more sinister in at least two of these pictures; namely, the wolf on the stairs and the monster under the bed. The wolf on the stairs has a human arm and hand, while the blocks on the floor of the girl’s bedroom spell out ‘DADDY NO’. These little touches should remind us all that monsters really DO exist, and that they are humans who perpetrate the most horrible, unimaginable evil..like the Austrian man who imprisoned his daughter and children. The wolf coming down the stairs could so easily be an enraged perpetrator of family violence; the monster in the bedroom could be the paedophile family member creeping in in the dead of night. One could easily see how children, not understanding these human horrors, would create a dark, imaginative monstrous replacement.

    Well done again – horrifying.

most of these were my childhiid fears and i actually saw most of them even though there were differnt ceacherse they were the same thing other then the lady that sat in my room every day and night watching me and she was worse then the first pic with the dead lady and the baby

  196. 196 leimrod May 20th, 2008 at 8:38 am

Seriously, those pictures sent a chill down my spine. Any art that can invoke an emotive response from me has done its job. Great work, keep it up. Here’s a stumble 1 for you ;)

These are GREAT works of art–AMAZING skill, etc. I just have to ask–are the little kids at all traumatized? Were they really scared when they were taking the shots because holy hell they’re fear looks genuine?!!!! Haha, okay, and PS to everyone–WEREWOLVES. totally exist. along with the man beneath the stairs O_O

    Wow!!
this is amazing work and even more amazing discussion!
I think that your art is amazing and your photos incredible. the stories that they tell and the fears that they portrayal are conveyed in absolutely incredible way. you have my vote on every one of your photos.
on the other hand it is sad to read some of the remarks here. like the one of the naked girl? I had to go back and look again to really notice that as being a single element of the whole photo. I know that people should express their opinions and I appriciate that but,, bashing something like this based on your own bias is just wrong.

thanks for sharing your art,,,,, you rule!!!!

  204. 204 KnowledgeNinja May 20th, 2008 at 6:47 pm

I think these are great. Art is SUPPOSED to effect you emotionally. Who says it has to be in a good way? All the negative reactions to me just speak to Mr. Hoffine’s artistry and creativity.

To all these people that think this is rubbish, please go read the your fairy tales again. Not the Disney version, dig a bit deeper, find the Brothers Grim versions.

I think the works are amazing, and capture the childhood fear well. They are disturbing, but that is what makes them fantastic. Good work

  208. 208 Raach May 20th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

These are really great pictures, Scares me a little bit cause I’m a huge scaredy cat so I may have nightmares, but I really appreciate creativity like this.

    Kylie said:

“The wolf coming down the stairs could so easily be an enraged perpetrator of family violence; the monster in the bedroom could be the paedophile family member creeping in in the dead of night.”

Good catch Kylie. I grew up with a violent, abusive mother and more than once I cowered just like that while this huge angry monster-woman bore down on me. Giant spiders and evil clowns are creepy enough but *this* is the one that got my heart pounding.

  210. 210 me May 21st, 2008 at 8:29 am

captivating. what an amazing and active imagination. i would love to be there to see the creative process–to hear the evolution of ideas. i bet you DO have a good time doing these with family and friends.
and i would think that it is good that the girl participates. perhaps, through this, she realizes that the fears are not justified she sees that its just makeup and lights

    great great work
    thanks

  211. 211 Rudy May 21st, 2008 at 11:43 am

Peter, clearly you are not a photographer, photoshop and other photo editing software is such an intricate part of photography these days when it comes to fixing and making slight changes to help create the photo you had in your head, but you wouldn’t know that since your a retard who’s best photo is from there cellphone camera. Also I would like to note that it is clear that you did you photoshop for more then “finesse details and to adjust color and contrast”. None the less excellent photos.

  212. 212 oz May 21st, 2008 at 3:58 pm

It would be nice to put such creative talent towards positive images, kids Minds should be cherished. I don’t dislike these images but they represent to me the fact I have no control over my sons fears.

  213. 213 Death May 21st, 2008 at 4:28 pm

    Awesome pictures!
However, I found more enjoyment reading the comments left by quite possibly the most intelligent people ever!
My favorite is probably that these photos are “borderline child pornography” Have you ever seen a huggies commercial??
Its amazing how simple minded some people can be. Step out of the dark ages and into the light. There is a WHOLE new world out there, and they are too scared and sheltered to see it.

    Great work, keep it up!

I stumbled on this and It’s so amazing!

I used to get really freaked out when I was going up the stairs at night because the stair behind the one you stepped on would creak, so I would keep looking behind me to make sure nothing was fallowing me.

    To Death: Nicely said!

  219. 219 Shery May 22nd, 2008 at 3:07 pm

I stumbled upon this website and it’s absolutely amazing.
I read about half of these comments, and over half of those were all negative. i.e., references to pedophilia, accusations of having a warped mind, child abuse, the artist’s “bad childhood” and all I can think to myself is “What the hell?”

    Who are you people?

Can you not understand the beauty of emotion? Just because it’s not happy or society’s definition of beautiful, doesn’t make it worthless.

Fear itself is one of the strongest and most gripping emotions… It controls your actions, your thought process, everything. And to capture it this strongly, ESPECIALLY through a child’s eyes, is breathtaking.

I remember running up the basement steps because I was afraid something would grab my ankle on the way up. And these pictures brought all of that RAW emotion back.

Artist, thank you for your work. Getting caught up in my adult life, I forgot what it’s like to just feel. You are truly a breath of fresh air.

  220. 220 Jeff May 22nd, 2008 at 11:26 pm

I hope to be able to take such great ones when i do photography.
The clown one freaked me right out! One of my fears through childhood and even now still.

People who are slagging these off shouldnt even bother wasting there time looking at them =S
Theyre obviously too good for you.

  223. 223 Kay May 23rd, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Well I thought they were just amazing that would be like an awesome thing to do for a business one like Halloween or something

  224. 224 Bryan May 23rd, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Lots of feedback… I can see why people leave negative feedback–this work made me feel uncomfortable–but that’s just testimony for how bad ass it is. Really good pictures that really hit some basic fears. For all of those wondering what kind of mind it would take–you’re so silly…it takes a human mind, look at the world around you.

  225. 225 griff May 24th, 2008 at 1:16 am

OH DUUUUUUDE!!! I loved your pictures!! You’re awesome!!! How did you come up with all these amazing ideas? I loved the one of the baby being held by whatever that is.. it totally captured my fear I had as a baby that one day I would be held by one of those things.. it blew my mind! I especially liked that one with the bugs coming out of the mothers mouth… she totally looks dead man, thats awesome! And if anybody thinks that a picture of an unnecessarily naked underage girl is disturbing… what F*&*^%KIN PLANET ARE YOU FROM???? YOU’RE the sick one.. you need therapy.. I don’t find the “daddy no” in blocks on the floor is creepy at all.. who would read anything into that? Only someone who is truly twisted. I also appreciate the people who stand up to insult and belittle those who merely point out that they’re disturbed by these images.. how f*&*^king DARE they? I am an artist myself and often use my freedom of expression as a cover-up to produce sick and twisted images that scare and disgust people because lets face it.. theres not enough art out there thats purely done for shock value.
IF ANYONE ELSE HAS ANYTHING NEGATIVE TO SAY,,, I SAY WE SHOULD ALL BAND TOGETHER AND HURL INSULTS AND OBSCENITIES AT THEM UNTIL THEY SHUT UP!!!
WAY TO GO MAN!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!! YOU ROCK.

  230. 230 Boris H May 25th, 2008 at 8:33 am

Excellent photos man. I really enjoyed them.

  231. 231 Colin May 25th, 2008 at 10:30 am

These are fantastic…The reason why children are afraid of the dark is because when there’s nothing to see, your imagination fills in the spaces.

    Scary.
    Accurate.

  232. 232 EggShell May 25th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

The pictures are “childish” but in a simplistic and shallow way.
Cleary the photographer is a provocator, using cheap tricks to raise primitive emotions. What’s more simple then taking a half naked girl and putting a spider on her face. it reminds me of clips in MTV – cheap stuff for empty headed bored teenagers. so keep responding with “WOW” and “DUDE” and “WAY TO GO MAN” this is your taste and you deserve it.
But I think the problem with the photographer is more deep. Of course he will rationalise the photos to himself as “art” or as a “way to get attention and money”, but underneath the surface he chooses to put spiders on half naked little girls and if you don’t see the problem with that you are either dense, stupid, bored adolescents or worse – just sick.

photos are excellent, what the hell is the psychology of a child’s fear of what’s under the bed. Can someone tell me? It seems so irrational, why the bed???

As a child I was paralysed with the fear of something that was under my bed, and I dreamt that if I stepped on the floor it would grab my foot and when I screamed nothing came out.

Pretty terrible fear for a child to have, your picture captures this fear well

    Well done

  235. 235 Jeff May 26th, 2008 at 12:36 am

@ all the idiots claiming “perversion”

    FAIL!

@ all the idiots claiming “this will harm the child(rem) that participated in the making”

    FAIL!

    1. Any perversion is in the mind of the beholder. Best you beholdin’ your comments to yourself if they are shouting something about perversion or morality.

    2. These children weren’t put in any danger. Nor will they be harmed from seeing mommy in a bit of makeup and some stage props around her. Get a life. Just because the pics are scary doesn’t mean they were scary to make (duh!)

    3. (and this would be 1, except for the whiners/wankers) DAMN good Art! Scary as hell, disturbing, the mom/child/roaches creeped me waaaaaay out.

  236. 236 thetawaves May 26th, 2008 at 11:10 am

that is some phenominal work, it’s literally what you always fear when you’re a kid.

Very creative, especially if it’s not photoshop’d (I’m astounded no one has done the typical thing of “yeahz dis iz fotoshoppd lolz”)

  237. 237 geoff May 26th, 2008 at 5:06 pm

This is phenomenally good work from a technical and artistic viewpoint. Really good lighting, composition, everything. But the reason behind all this? Sorry, for me it points to a disturbed mind. Why on earth would you WANT to take pictures like this? Like, I myself have taken shots of people lying down in the dirt, where it looks like they could be dead, so I’m not opposed to a bit of darkness in my art at all, but this is incredible. You must be obsessed with these dark themes to get such a fabulously strong collection of images together. I’m’ very curious as to what you are hoping people will take from these images. I suppose I would just prefer it if you used your obvious talent on making images that were positive, instead of images that provoke and awake the fear that lives inside us all. Fear is the ONE main thing that makes us live our lives in ways we would rather not – fear is not on the road to freedom. Fear is the way to compromise and mediocrity.

Brilliant work, really I can’t praise your photography skills enough. I KNOW how much work would have went into these shots. But the why… I can’t quite get my head around that. Anyway, thanks for making me think.

  238. 238 wtf2 May 27th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Whose kid is in all these pictures? Nice thing to expose your kid to. Really responsible.
    Fucking sick.

These are stunningly creative pictures, and oh so creepy. I cant imagine how traumatized that kid in the photos must be!

  244. 244 J May 29th, 2008 at 12:10 pm

So, about the “nudity”. So, it’s more of a question of:
a.) Does the picture attempt to illicit a sexual response… I really don’t think so. I mean the focus even in the mirror is on the monster.
b.) Does it appear that the child was taken advantage of, again it seems more of just what a normal little kid would be dresses like.

On the other hand, this does not mean that the above people view it in a sexual manner, it’s just with actual exploitation happening in real life some people get reminded of that when they see a child semi-nude.

Anyhow… I’m still digesting them, but definitely interesting.

  245. 245 Janice May 29th, 2008 at 1:28 pm

    That is some fine work.
The 2nd picture of the little boy, that is truly a horrifying thought.
You’re mind is a complex thing.
Thank you, StumbleUpon for another fine website journey.

amazing skill, gruesome and in my own opinion a bit over the line (but again thats just me), but yes the amount of skill put into these pictures is just amazing

  247. 247 Perpetuallyperplexed May 29th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Great work! The photoshopping was a bit understated, as it is easy to see in some places. The first pic reminds me of a dream I had as a child exactl; I awoke in my mother’s bed and her back was turned but she had white hair and wrinkles. I was so afraid of disturbing the monster that replaced my mom and seeing its face that the whole dream was just me being paralyzed :P When you think of these images as something a child could regard as real, that’s when you really see the terror in them…

  248. 248 Gee May 29th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Sick and disgusting, but in a very beautifully done way. I personally don’t like any of them since I was a coward as a child and they bring up some painful memories (the mother ones especially), but I can clearly see the stunning level of technical skill and artistic creativity involved in these pictures. Well done, these are amazing, even if I’m not a big fan of them.

  249. 249 AJ May 29th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Horrifically surreal, but in a good way. I, personally, think its really interesting how you project childhood fears. You are very talented, but I think people would be a lot happier if you used your talent to create more positive images.

  250. 250 jak May 29th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

wow. brings back many a fear from my childhood. i especially like the gas mask one, reminds me of a Dr. Who episode.

  251. 251 Coco May 29th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

The level of emotional responses speak volumes of your photography skills and imagination. People must have strong emotions behind their hating criticism, this means you really touched them in a way. hehehe wtg

  252. 252 Ruby May 29th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

These are all gorgeous … reading all the comments re: what sort of mind these must have come from … well, I ain’t qualified to judge on that count.

I will say that of them all, I like the last one best. It’s the only one (I think — I’m not going to scroll back up as it’s 1 AM and I’d sooner look at these again when I’m *not* trying to get to sleep in an empty house!) that doesn’t show anything directly threatening, but rather something disturbing at arm’s length. There’s something wonderfully eerie about that.

  253. 253 Archirat May 29th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

I am amused by all the reactions. Not only is this a study on the imagination and fear of children, it’s a study on the social networking of adults and teenagers.

I don’t that Eggshell will read this comment, as he/she found this art tacky but I wanted to respond to the comment that the photographer is a provocateur. To be honest, I find this comment dreadfully unfair as most ‘art’ of this day and age is made for the shock value or to be obscure. Sometimes both…

However this artist, and I purposefully call him so, is speaking in a very real way about fears that many people had as children and have now. I myself cannot sleep in my bed, in the dark after reading National Geographic, watching documentaries on mummies, or going on ghost tours. (For anyone else willing to read my comment, I understand the stupidity of going on ghost tours when I am frightened of them, but what makes me frightened is also what intrigues me so very much.) The art is allowed to have more layers, and until the artist says anything about the images of the partially-clothed children I will freely imagine that it is a comment on how children can respond to threatening situations, not necessarily that they are being threatened.

(A clarification on this, my little sister has autism, she would watch Disney movies and then repeat the lines for her own amusement. My parents had a hard time telling her not to repeat the lines “Help Me, Somebody! Anybody!’ Those lines are said by Simba after Mufasa has been murdered, but you can imagine why my parents were worried if she said this at say, a supermarket. The threat to her wasn’t real, but in the mind of adults, it’s just as real as monster is to little kids.)

Anyway, I am commenting on a host of things from across the map. The photos fascinated me and made me think about my fears, current and past, and how I would want to represent them.

  254. 254 Kornfritterz May 30th, 2008 at 1:35 am

wow.. the first thing i thought was “HOLY SH!T” when i was your stuff.. i mean some of this just totally freaked the living hell out of me….. I LOVE IT! lol.. some Terribly Twisted stuff.. but you have a great gift with the way you portray your ideas… the ones with the Dead people and their Children freaked me out the most.. but the one that really got me was the Closet monster thing.. the detail you put into it was amazing, and will definitely give me some nightmares tonight.. so to counteract this, ima go visit some pron to help counteract it.. but hopefully i wont start associating these images when im with a lady.. because then i will truly be fncked dn

  255. 255 Brett May 30th, 2008 at 2:45 am

Nice shots. Creepy. I bet the kids loved making these photos. What a fun childhood and what awesome stories and photos they get to tell/show their friends at school.

  256. 256 El May 30th, 2008 at 7:30 am

Amazing photography. I love pieces that can raise so much controversy and these have certainly accomplished that. The one with the thing under the stairs is my favorite, probably cause that was my big fear growing up in my house. Spooky spooky stairs.

  257. 257 Krysil May 30th, 2008 at 7:33 am

I just thought it was strange that people are up in a rage about a girl who is in her underwear. If you’re going to be that anal why not point out that the baby is half naked too AND you can see it’s nipples. Why is it OK to take half-naked photos of babies for artistic purposes but not of their older less innocent counter-parts for the same purpose? You can attack the artist but then you might want to attack every photographer that took a picture of a child in underwear for magazines and ads too.

    Creepy stuff, well executed.

  258. 258 Imansyah™ May 30th, 2008 at 8:20 am

    These pics are amazing!!

  259. 259 Dauragon May 30th, 2008 at 10:39 am

Wow, these comments make me want to grab my shotgun an go Stupid Huntin’

Seriously, do you honestly think those kids were TRAUMATIZED by being in these photos. Obviously a lot of touching up was done in afterwards, probably half of all the crap in the pictures wasn’t there when the kid was posing. Also for the “OMG those kids were really scared” comments. You guys have obviously never seen a bunch of kids acting out movies that they have seen or stories they have been told. Me and my friends used to play Three Little Pigs together and whenever the big bad wolf blew down the house we would scream like crazy people and run like our lives were really in grave danger. It’s not that difficult to evoke raw emotion out of a child.

I find it greatly annoying that these people treat these children like they are fucking retarded. Give the goddamn kids some credit. I’m sure they weren’t really convinced that the boogiemonster (THAT PROBABLY WASN’T EVEN FUCKING IN THE SHOOT) was going to eat them. If anything this was probably super fun for the kids. I know I would have had a damn blast.

  260. 260 Ringo May 30th, 2008 at 11:01 am

To all the commenters who keep saying that the comments on “borderline pedophilia”, and saying that people who would see it like that need help? Well, as much as you would like to pretend it doesn’t exist, pedophilia is a very real, dangerous and LARGE problem, especially in the US. If there weren’t that many pedophiles, could they create a whole show (To Catch A Predator) designed just to catch and expose them? For those of us who see these as art, it’s fine, but the sick sad truth of the matter is, right now at this moment there are a multitude of pedos looking at these images and fapping furiously, emailing the link to their sick friends, who in turn will get their jollies out of seeing exposed vulnerable children in terror. Because that’s what it’s about for them, they are the monsters under the bed, hiding in the closets, and prowling under the stairs, living off the fears of innocent children. And while I think it is fine for an artist to have freedom of expression, I don’t think they should be posted in such an acessible manner as this website, which is linked to various search engines.

  261. 261 Mark May 30th, 2008 at 2:52 pm

Wow.. that’s all I can say.

I had my share of childhood fears, but I’m afraid none of these really made me recall any of them. The artwork, however, is fantastic. I especially like the one with the clown and the last one, mainly for the air of mystery surrounding them.

A number of people have said that one shouldn’t criticize art if one has no artistic talents oneself.. and I would fall squarely into that category.. but I have to say, many of these could have been better by playing more on the fear of the unknown than a scary-looking monster. I liked the one with the hands reaching out from behind the couch, because you don’t know what’s behind there.. you just know it’s human, and it wants you. I’m not particularly fond of the basement or refrigerator ones, because both of the monsters look like something from a video game, something that I myself (and many kids today..) are desensitized to.

Regardless, very well done. I remain amazed.

they made my skin crawl, very nice

  263. 263 Kenton May 30th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

first off, amazing work, absolutely amazing.

secondly to some of the people posting comments about the nude children, it’s art…nudity whether children or not has been in art since the first people started creating it.
nudity in this case im sure was used to show vulnerability.
yes, i’m sure there are some creeps cruising these pictures and getting off on that…but not normal people who just enjoy art…would you rather the artist hide his work away and not have a chance to get it out to his audience?

  264. 264 AreYouSerious? May 30th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

    @EggShell

Are you serious? It amazes me how much idiocy plagues the internet, not once whilst looking over these images did I think “Wow, look at those half naked children”, I don’t believe that was anywhere near the intention of the photos. I suggest you start looking at yourself and start questioning why it is the “naked little girls” were the first thing to catch YOUR attention.

@Everyone else who is crying “WONT SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN”

Are we honestly living in THAT sort of world? Do you people think at all? The children would have been fully aware of what was going on. No, it’s not going to scar them. No, it’s not sick. You people need to grow up.

@Everyone who saw that these photos and recognizes their technical and emotional merit

    <3

  265. 265 Matt May 31st, 2008 at 12:23 am

Absolutely amazing. Really liked/dreaded the clown one, because of the movie “It”.

  266. 266 John Wiser May 31st, 2008 at 2:16 am

I have to say, this makes me think of Stephen King. Very detailed, somewhat gruesome at times, and very creepy/scary. I love when the fears can be captured like that….it’s like a whole new experience. I didn’t have too many childhood fears. My imagination was a playground for scary things. Even had an “invisible friend” that was a Werewolf…though his name was Werewolf too…never sure why I never game him a proper name. lol

But I do love the way these pictures grab the imagination and shake it up. Too awesome.

What a poppet! You have great friends and family to go along with your dream like this.
I absolutely loved the artistry involved and would just love to know how you got many of the effects without extensive ‘shopping’.
A truly great blog, thanks sooo much for sharing yourself with everyone.

  272. 272 Hugo May 31st, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Wow. These are creepy, horrible, gross, and any other vile adjective you can think of. I don’t like them at all. But, from an artistic viewpoint, these are all very well done. It’s not something in my taste, not at all. But I can appreciate how these trigger the primal fears children tend to have. That one with the scary clown hit home.

  273. 273 Xybelle May 31st, 2008 at 10:57 pm

These are amazing! I had quite a few of these fears when I was little (truth be told I still have some) and to see them captured in art like this is amazing. You have a great talent. :)

  274. 274 Ashes May 31st, 2008 at 11:42 pm

I have to say that I enjoyed these pictures very much. Most of them brought back something from my childhood that I thought I had forgotten. The “Daddy No” written in blocks in Picture 6 still shakes me up.

Seeing the dead mothers in Pictures 1 and 11 made me tear up. I don’t remember exactly how I felt as a small child, but I did have a terrible fear of losing my mother. She died of cancer when I was five, so I saw her during the end stages of her life. I can kind of rationalize it now because I’m an adult, but back then…

I have to admit that I still have fears of going into the basement at night.

The pictures are great. I do want to see more of your stuff.

  275. 275 drifter Jun 1st, 2008 at 7:55 am

Creepy! Amazing…and creepy! Quite artisticly done…and creepy! Awesome photography going on there!

  277. 277 Mauldus Jun 1st, 2008 at 11:34 am

What amazing imagery! I loved the surreal colors. Looks like a dream. You didn’t cover my childhood fear though. I always dreamed of being burned alive in my house. Though, that might be a bit difficult to do with still photography. My little brother used to have nightmares that the wicked witch of the west was flying up in the corner of his room. Would love to see what you do with those.

    Keep up the fantastic work.
    Cheers.

  278. 278 Dayuse Jun 1st, 2008 at 3:42 pm

But these are amazing! Really creative and scary as all hell. Awesome job!

beautiful and so haunting. bravo :)

i’d love to hear the conversations between those kids and their therapists later in life…;p

the monster in the mirror or the man outside the window perhaps? those still scare me…

  281. 281 Tyler Jun 1st, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Brilliant. I can only imagine the hours of time each of these shots took.

  282. 282 cupcakegirl Jun 1st, 2008 at 8:17 pm

screw those who are saying “oooh you must be mental to have taken these photos” “what kind of childhood did you have growing up” Not all photographs are necessarily of flowers and animals and people looking glamourous. I love the creativity and artistry of these pictures! Some are disturbing and I think that’s a good thing, if you can create an image that is disturbing yet at the same time artistic and beautiful AND scary…then you are a TRUE artist!

    Bravo to you!

  283. 283 Ryah Jun 1st, 2008 at 8:39 pm

I was like “eh” until I saw the Clown one. Clowns are not ok. They are FREAKS OF NATURE with their RED NOSES and OVERLY CURLY HAIR and their SHRILL LAUGHS and their MUTANT-SIZED FEET. Stephan King’s It did not help. I momentarily forgot myself and was like, “NOOOOO DON’T TAKE IT’S CLAW ‘TWILL EAT YOU CHILD RUNNNNNNNNNN!!!”

Other than that, they seemed pretty photoshopped. I highly doubt a baby would fall asleep in the arms of something like that. I’ve put a lot of babies to sleep when babysitting, and my God they will not shut their eyes if there is the slightest weird thing.

And maybe the little girl should have a little more than underwear on. Not that it’s wrong she doesn’t, but perhaps with the camera, it’s just a teeny bit awkward. The old classic baby picture is embarrassing enough, think about having to try and explain these in the family photo album… ;)

  284. 284 Steff Jun 1st, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Omg… I totally always hed dreams about bears/wolves/etc. attacking me… When I was younger. And when I saw the picture with the wolf, I freaked. It creeped me out haha =|

    Good pictures, nonetheless.

    Totally genius. I love it.

  286. 286 Hatake Shadowstrom Jun 2nd, 2008 at 12:42 am

Quite incredible work you have. I’m quite impressed that there was no real use of Photoshop. The one coming out of the closet is my favorite for some reason, but allow me a tangent and say it reminds me of Wildmutt from Ben 10. lol I’m such an overgrown kid. XD Anyway, lovely work. Many kudos for you. :3

  287. 287 Dave Jun 2nd, 2008 at 1:32 am

I had pretty much all of these fears as a kid in similar forms, but the the spider in the attic make me creep out (I guess I still have that fear)…
There’s a spider in the attic! A spider! Just there! It’s HUGE! Blurgh!

  288. 288 James Jun 2nd, 2008 at 7:20 am

    Completely sick.

  289. 289 Aachi Jun 2nd, 2008 at 11:02 am

Wow, I got through the whole series of pictures without being scared or revolted. It seems I’m one of the few. I guess being an artist myself and seeing others’ much more ‘in depth’ pieces of work have something to do with it. I must admit that my pieces are… never gruesome. Its not something that I can deliver. Though I had my fair share of horrific childhood nightmares and fears. Watching ‘the Relic’ at like 9 years old with my ‘big tough’ cousins, gave me nightmares for months and I slept with the blankets over my head because I thought the thing would come out from the dark and eat my brain. :P looking back now, i know how silly that is. Point i’m trying to make is that children have wild imaginations and can get scared of things adults would never think of. So this is great representation of thinking through a child’s mind. I agree that you should consider joining the movie business, possibly as a lighter or make up artist just to get in the door. But it definitely looks like you have the potential to be an art director for horror films. But on the topic of the little girl.. there are several family album pictures of me and my other young relatives and young friends in just undies (and i am a girl myself), and nobody ever thought twice of it. And I don’t mind sharing those childhood pics of me in my undies with me friends here in Cali, cus they all have some pics of them in their undies in their family photos. Summer is sweltering in Kansas where I’m from, children in just undies running around in the backyard and the house is very common and no one thinks anything of it since children don’t know any better and most of the time they just peel their clothes right back off again if someone dresses them.
Though everyone is entitled to an opinion, I can see from this board that this is very ‘controversial art’, something that I could never do. I tend to do more young adult or child oriented sketches or pieces. I congratulate you! You’re well talented in something many could never do or even want to attempt. You must have a strong stomach. ^.^ (I agree and think you would work well with Tim Burton. A lot of these pictures and especially the bugs bring Beetlejuice to mind.)

  290. 290 Bossmuff Jun 2nd, 2008 at 11:59 am

And from the comments alone, both good and bad, this is a success. It’s not even patently offensive; it’s just a depiction of childhood fears. It’s not even that bloody or violent, and not really sexualized at all.

I don’t find these disgusting. They’re unnerving, and that’s good.

They’re a more psychological horror; a distortion of common ‘childish’ things and the fears of children. Not gory, but simply grotesque. I think they’re very well-done in that regard. The faces are expressive, the imagery provocative, and the blend of normalcy and monstrousity works to convey fear.

There are some specific ones I’ll mention as having particular effects. The spider on the child bothers me on some level; there’s a creepy sense of repose surrounding it that seems uncharacteristic. That kind of contrast adds to the horror of it. The same goes to the first picture (which I saw somewhere else before I came here) which mixed the distended, rage-warped face with swarming spiders. The wolf one reminds me of my own fears as a child. Canines always disturbed me on some level, and the idea of a man becoming a wolf became of interest as I aged. These work on more levels than just childish fears – the represent some of the more refined fears that adults can develop (the living dead, for example, the prospect of a man becoming a wolf). This is what I can take from this.

These are well-done, and represent their intent. Interesting.

Watch everyone call me a horrible man for not addressing the ‘abuse’ and the ‘sick mind’ needed to come up with a representation of fear. I don’t see any evidence of a child being damaged by this kind of thing. Seriously, some people just like to preach their morality and look for threats where there really are none. :p

so what, do you like stuff Halloween candy with cyanide and razorblades and pass them out to kids on your block during Halloween? or maybe lsd. that would explain the photos… jk. you have some real talent with both a camera and with photoshop. very, very nice. you have a very creative mind.

  293. 293 lilwoman1386 Jun 3rd, 2008 at 9:34 am

For all the people who keep saying that the artist must have had to go through childhood trauma to have had fears like these, I say bulldooky my friends, pure bulldooky. I had a very normal suburban childhood. Believe me nothing could be more “abso-boringly normal” than my hometown and my family. But I still had nightmares, I still had fears. Childhood fears aren’t always brought on by trauma (unlike what every friggin psych class student who’s only halfway thru their training wants to tell you- a little bit of info is a dangerous thing, folks.) Haven’t you ever seen a scary movie and been so young or so gullible that your mind starts telling you those things could exist? Isn’t that the point of a scary movie? My parents and I even made a Mary Had a Little Lamb movie (which they still have… and show to people to embarrass me) to teach me about movie magic when I was only about 4 because I had seen part of a scary movie they were watching when I’d gotten up from bed. And don’t even get me started on the shapes one can make in their mind out of piles of toys in the dark or shadows on the wall. All you need to have childhood fears is a vivid imagination.
Spiders on the other hand, are just creepy by themselves- BLEH!
Great work these are truly works of art, tho quite creepy! Especially the ones with spiders… man I hate those things!!

Wow these are amazing.. i could see my child dreams in this.. my son would freak with the spider one he hates them..

i also have a couple ideas you could use.. one would be maybe a spirit floading over a bed or in a courner ( this one was mine growing up).. also my sons is being attached by spiders and bugs all over the floor trying to get him. ( he hates buggys)… but i will have to visit your site again..

Half of this scared the crap outta me when I was little.

Yo seriously, if the first thing you think about when you see a half naked girl of that age is “wow, how sexual!” then YOU’RE the pervert, not the artist, you damn freak.

These pictures are amazing! In regards to the little girl in her underwear… little girls run around in their undies all the time, and I think that adds a realistic aspect to those pics, as well as portraying the girl as even more vulnerable. I bet she had a great time while posing for these, and is and will continue to be terribly proud of the images.

Amazing! truly amazing! About the girl, only fascist ignorants would think something wrong about it, I think it says something about themselves (the ones making the comments). And about photoshop… people that don’t know anything about photography are bound to make those stupid remarks, ignore them… you are a great artist with a great vision. keep it up… you rock!

  306. 306 xnoelle25 Jun 7th, 2008 at 3:20 am

wow. i’m amazed. you captured childhood fears perfectly, without watering it down like many other people do. childhood fears are much more frightening then people would like to think. i feel like i’m 8 again, looking at some of these.

  307. 307 scarson1 Jun 7th, 2008 at 3:34 am

I thought the photos were brilliant. The clown pic is very scary for me, bringing back memories of Pennywise the Clown from “Stephen King IT”. The pictures look like they should be in a dark fairytales book. Great job.

  308. 308 Worried Parent Jun 7th, 2008 at 8:20 am

Please tell me that no children were harmed, physically OR mentally, in the shooting of these pictures…

  309. 309 Liza Riis Jun 7th, 2008 at 10:33 am

Realy cool! I love it. Well done all those classical theme’s.

  310. 310 Cindy Jun 7th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

WONDERFUL! I was really creeped out by these pictures… Especially the thing under the stairs. Ew… That’s a fear I hadn’t thought of in over a decade. Gee, thanks for bringing that one back. ;) I definitely think you should make a book – possibly of some info on childhood fears along with the pictures. Or possibly make a phobia book that explains each phobia and pictures… Mine is mottephobia – moths. They are nasty and irratic and feed on the dead. Ugh… Not that I would love to see a picture, but I’m sure there is much you can do with phobias, too. Please, keep up the good work! :)

To all the naysayers: If this is not be your cup of tea, move on to another site. No need to stay and make negative comments.

  311. 311 ALyssa Jun 7th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

I always had a fear of my mom being dead… And the one with the monster under the stairs is very scary!!

  312. 312 jazzy1224 Jun 8th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

Great work!! Awesome photography…keep it up..great representation of the fears of a child…Really incredible stuff!!

  313. 313 Hotaru Jun 8th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Absolutely awesome. That actress is amazing. My favorites are the wolf one and the mom on the bed. I definitely had the second one as a kid. And the child in that picture doesn’t have that cheesy scream face. She looks confused and doesn’t understand what’s happening, afraid of what she might find if she looks at the face. Spot on, totally excellent.

  314. 314 betsy Jun 8th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

…holy crap. these were stunning. scary as hell, but in an absolutely brilliant way. amazing work! especially the monster under the bed one. that was my ultimate number one childhood fear.

  315. 315 znegative Jun 8th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

fantastic work. inspiring to say the least. love it…keep it up!

  316. 316 Alyse Jun 9th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

    stunning

  317. 317 Sam Jun 10th, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Infants only have two fears. The two fears that we are all born with. The fear of loud noises and the fear of falling. All other fears are learned fears. So to answer that one persons question yeah youre right. It all depends of the age of the child.

  318. 318 Cyberman Jun 10th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Awesome ,I love looking at these to find ideas of how to do my own.

  319. 319 adi Jun 10th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

these pix are awesome! u seriously hav talent dude

  320. 320 nebcat Jun 11th, 2008 at 11:41 am

Fantastic composition and lighting. The use of realism and texture are breathtaking. True, as reading through the comments, yes – it takes a certain ‘mind’ to bring these images to life. Not everyone will like these images and feel ‘warm and fuzzy,’ and immediately labels the photos as ‘sick.’ I’m sure that was the reason why these photos were created in the first place, to raise questions. True artists have no bias toward content of art. History shows us that alot of Medieval paintings depicting murder, torture, and medical surgeries with living humans. If we look back to the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo was furious at the Pope for breaking a promise and ended up creating the most largest and most shocking (in those times) painting in the world. People thought Michelangelo was ‘sick.’ Now, we embrace it. The images are not for everyone, and true, many non-savvy bloggers will ‘stumble’ across this page not fully aware of it’s content. I feel that the Artist of this thread should rename the header to warn those of it’s ‘graphic’ content due to it’s nature of shocking parents and children. That way, we, as artists, may comment about it creativity and not judge by it content. Cheers!

  321. 321 Jazz Jun 11th, 2008 at 4:54 pm

    Freaky.

Do I find them disturbing because of childhood nightmares or are they just disturbing?

I know for fact that my sister has a clown phobia and I just recalled the wolves nightmare….shit. Everyone turns to wolves when I close my eyes.

Dont look under the bed and that shadow in the corner is me look closer you can see my hazel eyes peering out at you.

  322. 322 Jennifer Jun 11th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

    Very disturbing!

My favorite is the one of the girl descending the steps into the basement. This one seemed to ring true to me. However, the clown picture is interesting.

  323. 323 Samantha Jun 12th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Wow this really brought back some childhood fears I had. I use to have the same dream all the time of waking up finding my mother dead, also the boogy man under the stairs in the basement. Very creepy!!!

  324. 324 lovers Jun 12th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

  325. 325 Miggs Jun 13th, 2008 at 5:29 am

Nicely done man ! The monsters are done really well , awesome concept … thought you did an amazing job .

  326. 326 Solo Jun 13th, 2008 at 8:52 am

Awesome work. As the best pieces of art is controversial aswell. You see a lot of ppl with good technical skill in internet, but few of them have the touch of an artist.

  327. 327 Lana Jun 13th, 2008 at 8:52 am

Creative, they’re describing some of the very common childhood fears, I had some of em when I was a kid :D

  328. 328 vanderleun Jun 13th, 2008 at 10:01 am

The work is indeed of a high order of craft, but the impulse beneath it is of a low order of sensibility. Too bad to see such craft wasted on such trash. Too bad that the creator is compelled to drag some child into their swamp.

  329. 329 AJ Jun 13th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

creepy, I’d say some are fears for adults as well. Great photography, no matter how disturbing it is. :)

  330. 330 ella Jun 15th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

    RE:

“. If there weren’t that many pedophiles, could they create a whole show (To Catch A Predator) designed just to catch and expose them? For those of us who see these as art, it’s fine, but the sick sad truth of the matter is, right now at this moment there are a multitude of pedos looking at these images and fapping furiously, emailing the link to their sick friends, who in turn will get their jollies out of seeing exposed vulnerable children in terror.”

good lord, please shut up. my job involves working with paedophiles and frankly your summation of them is just ridiculous. please refrain from making any more psychological analysis’ from TELEVISION SHOWS.

  331. 331 james Jun 15th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

you hit the nail on the head with each one of these

  332. 332 jen Jun 16th, 2008 at 9:42 am

I had several of these childhood fears and thanks to the artist now the children in the pictures will have these fears too.

  333. 333 Cool Photos Jun 16th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

this collection is at the same time the scariest and most impressive I’ve ever seen

all the images are so rich of feelings and featuring children make them even worse

    congratulations to who made them

I particularly like the first one

  334. 334 babs Jun 16th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

    Disgusting

  335. 335 Alex Jun 17th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

    I LOVE these photos!

  337. 337 Tsumeato Jun 17th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

wow, these truly are works of art =0 i was at first completely shocked with the first image but after that initial shock, i started to really look at the artwork you presented to all of us here. i’m glad my little stumble button brought me here :)

you wouldn’t happen to have a deviantART site would you? if so, please drop me a line at mine : http://www.graywolftsume.deviantart.com

  338. 338 misscheeveeus1 Jun 17th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

These are some amazing photos that capture many of the fears of childhood perfectly! To those who have negative comments, try looking at it like this…What Steven King does with words, this gentleman does with photographs…A lot of people say Steven King is sick too-and he just laughs all the way to the bank!

  343. 343 Maleficent Jun 20th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

I had a hellish childhood, but I would never keep it before me, as I would be no better then my self serving parents. The work is superb, yet I wonder why all the Fascination with the the dark side of life. Your talents would be better put on better subjects, such as searching for the good in life. Not the horror inside and out.

Awesome pics, how did you get in my head with the monsters under the stairs, in the closet and under the bed. Had to jump from my door to the bed so it wouldn’t grab me on my way to bed at night. Love your brain!

  346. 346 monkey Jun 22nd, 2008 at 5:54 am

These photos are really interesting and unique. wonder what you told the kids that took part about it though? just tell them its make believe?

    xD

  352. 352 Richard Jun 25th, 2008 at 7:07 am

i have to say these are fantastic. as someone who had a very vivvid imagination as a child these are some of the fears i had

the womand being pulled through the floor and the monster under the bed and behind the stairs did (and still) scare the shit out of me

and what really makes me laugh is the people that say its sick and twisted are probably the people renting saw4 from the video shop tonight. thats not art this is

  353. 353 Jeff Jun 25th, 2008 at 10:02 am

These are awesome! The only one I didn’t see is the “Toilet Training Terror” – the monstrous face and/or clawed hands that live in the toilet!

That used to scare the shit out of me as a kid. Which is appropriate when you think about it, I suppose…

  354. 354 Phani kk Jun 25th, 2008 at 10:17 am

Quite Interesting any way I am not Scared on Seeing ur collection.

  355. 355 Devin Jun 25th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

i sort of regret stumbling on these images right before going to sleep, but at the same time i am very glad i got to see these incredible photos-really great work! the first one is so incredibly creepy! my biggest childhood fear involved going into our basement to get clothes late at night. it was unfurnished and very unwelcoming, to get down their you hand to go around two bends of stairs. i was always terrified that i would turn the corner and be abducted by some faceless ghoul. wile no image directly addresses this fear to the word, they still stir up that feeling of terror. great work!

  356. 356 Nic Jun 25th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Dang, the kid in the gas mask takes me straight to terrifying memories of Dr. Who. Sheesh. That was one F*ed up episode.

but seriously, these are awesome. aside from the gas mask I’d have to say the first one is the most terrifying and is therefore my favorite.

  357. 357 Noadi Jun 26th, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Great work, truly creepy and fascinating.

Some of the comments about the kids are clearly from those who don’t know much either about kids or photography. These kids aren’t going to now have these fears, so much of photograph is posing and tricks, these kids would have most likely seen everything that went into the preparation. I shot a low budget zombie movie with a bunch of little kids in it and they grasp very easily that it’s all fake. I think a lot of adults forget what it was like being a kid and that kids understand the difference between fantasy and reality more than they are often given credit for. As for the little girl not wearing a shirt, big deal, there’s nothing sexual in that at all unless you project that onto the picture.

  358. 358 Bloggeries Jun 27th, 2008 at 9:01 am

Wow that is soo creepy. Glad I’m not a kid.

  359. 359 sunny Jun 28th, 2008 at 3:12 am

great work! a good representation of childhood fears – real or imagined.

  360. 360 kimokeo Jun 28th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Great work man! You are a true artist. It is not easy to take such a strong human emotion such as fear and bring it to life. As far as all the idiots that don’t get it or think that the series is causing trauma and bordering on child porn get a fucking life. If you don’t like the images don’t look at them. You have to be the one with the sick mind to even contemplate the idea of these representing porn. As far as traumatizing the children, the artist didn’t find real monsters and expose the children to them you damn idiots. It is was a photoshoot for Christ’s sake. Its called imagination and “pretend”.

  380. 380 Sarah Jul 10th, 2008 at 12:43 am

I personally love these. I don’t think that some people understand that these look more like adult representations of common childhood fears. The dead mother and bugs is more of a childhood fear of losing parents and bugs in general, for example.

And I understand that not everyone that posts has to like these, but at least try to be respectful for pete’s sake. Critique, say you don’t like it, but don’t blatantly diss his work because you don’t find it appealing. Just because something doesn’t meet your or society’s standards does not make it not art.

  381. 381 Talin Jul 10th, 2008 at 5:07 am

Fantastic work! I think that those who label the artist and photos as “sick” (or some other colorful adjective) are simply feeling betrayed. They think they’ve managed to outgrow those “silly fears” we all have when we’re young, only to have them reappear – updated and even more visceral and polished for the benefit of their refined, adult sensibilities.

It makes us feel vulnerable. It forces us to be children again, but not in that happy, nostalgia-filtered way. It makes us remember when WE were the ones whispering, “Daddy, no…” as he turned out the light and closed the door, because grownups KNOW there’s nothing under the bed. Right?

And if you think these photoshoots are somehow “damaging” to the children in them, you might not be thinking about the hours of preparation, setting up the shots, talking about poses and whatnot… It’s pretend; play-acting. If anything, these shoots will help de-mystify the bogeyman, and give the kids an ironic chance to be the ones turning out the lights on us, because they KNOW it’s only make-believe.

  382. 382 tina Jul 10th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

This is absolutely awesome. I’m still terrified that there is someone under by basement stairs waiting to grab my ankles.

  383. 383 Emil Jul 11th, 2008 at 8:39 am

Fantastic work! You have tapped into the very archetype of childhood terror. You are an amazing artist. Wow.

  384. 384 Tara Leigh Jul 11th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

These pics are beautiful… I was in complete awe. I had both fears of being grabbed from under the stairs and the gasmask thing just gives me the creeps. being chased up the stairs and seeing something else in the mirror other than myself late at night was the other lol… always covered my mirrors.
I love the pics, hope you are doing more

  385. 385 Gavin Jul 11th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

  386. 386 MissDiscipline Jul 13th, 2008 at 8:13 am

Childhood fears…Clowns always freaked me out and after reading “IT” as an adult they creep me out even more. What’s under the bed and in the closet fear, still feel that today on occasion after watching a thriller on TV before bed. Your pictures gave me chills and your imagination is brilliant! Thanks for sharing..kisses from Florida

  387. 387 xanz doe Jul 14th, 2008 at 4:10 am

All true art touches people. If it is successful, one often finds comments such as those that appear here. It repels some, attracts some and disturbs but even heals some… just as the opinions reflected in the comments.

The fact that some are so deeply put off by it (save the totally silly remarks of the child’s nudity… it is the observer who commented that sexualized the child, not the artist… in my opinion) is only testimony to the fact that it “worked”.

Only totally ho hum art, boring, superficial and meaningless art is without criticism, without opposition. So, if i were the artist i would feel very successful to find that so many have such a wide range of opinions about what i had presented.

As for myself, i had the usual childhood fears, and while they were not near so detailed (i didn’t have a face for what was under the bed but was only certain it was “bad” and would surely eat me all up), the themes of my fears are well represented here.

And were it my child in the photos, i am sure she would have a ball, love being included and see the total fantasy and the (even scary) fun of it all.

While they do arouse certain fears, many emotions in fact, they are also hauntingly beautiful. A real accomplishment and the artist has my admiration and my encouragement. An artist myself, i would be quite proud of this collection.

So, continue to shock and to bring people to even the fearful places in their hearts, as that is the aim and the intent and the goal of art, to feel and to feel profoundly…

  388. 388 Mark Wales Jul 18th, 2008 at 3:29 am

If that child didn’t have nightmares before this, she will now.

I think it’s sick, you must have been watching too many horror movies as a child.

I would never show my children these images.

  389. 389 Danyelle Jul 18th, 2008 at 8:51 am

OMG…..these are absolutely amazing….just about all of those i feared as a child. Spooky…yet i can’t stop looking at them. Thank You for sharing such great art!

  390. 390 Deckchair Jul 20th, 2008 at 1:19 am

Great site, but what a load of sanctimonious old farts with comments like I wouldn’t show them to my children. Nobody in their right mind would show them to a child, and as for paedophiles there are sites that cater for their brand of art. Keep up the good work

  391. 391 shortcake Jul 23rd, 2008 at 3:05 am

This is what builds one. Experiences, creative thinking and writing,
dreams can become art, the problem in this westrn world is that we are taught how to think and act. what to eat, how to fuck, what time to go to bed and what is normal and not. We either choose to obey or disobey and go our own way. these pictures are the acts of a man who is extremely sensitive . I know not why this has affected me so but i do know that people are fast to diss what they don’t understand .

  394. 394 Stephanie Jul 23rd, 2008 at 11:35 pm

I am one of those that would NEVER show my 12 year old…only because she has MANY of these fears and she scares easy. If she were older and wouldn’t get spooked, I’d show her in heartbeat because they are amazing.

Yes, they are freaky and yes they show what an incredible imagination the artist has, but to question the mental state is idiotic. I’m a writer…what I write is fiction, it’s not real life. Stephen King, an incredible writer…doesn’t mean he had a screwed up life just because he writes horror, it just means he has a better imagination than you; same with this artist! Give it a rest already!

    Great job!

I found the pictures fascinating. I didn’t suffer any of these childhood fears, but I had plenty of my own demons to deal with.

The thing I find scariest about this site, is some of the comments. These days political correctness has gone mad and turned ferel. I remember back when I was a child, kids used to run about at the beach or under the sprinklers in only our undies, or completely unclad and no one thought anything of it. Human beings are the ONLY animal on earth that feels the need to cover itself with clothing. This is the truly ‘abnormal’ behaviour. The human form is one of beauty as is that of any creature. I wonder about the state of mind of those whose only criticism is that the young child is wearing nothing on her top half. Get a life. Have you watched documentaries about various tribal peoples? They wear very little or nothing at all. It would appear that they are far more civilized that we claim to be!

    Great work.

  401. 401 Shaitan Jul 30th, 2008 at 6:53 am

    These Images are absolutely amazing!
The fun everyone must have had.

I see a very close family bond and alot of love and I saw no offensive or sick nudity in these at all.

Now as for the only one that seems to be a favorite (and the ones saying that stuff about this piece are more than likely guilty of right clicking and “saving target as .jpg to hard disk”)

I saw merely a little girl in a artistic work demonstrating a common fear of a monster coming out of the closet at an unpredicted moment.

I mean who is to say if this occurred you would be in your “Sunday Best”?

  402. 402 lily Jul 31st, 2008 at 12:16 pm

this is truly remarkable imagery!! youve got a really defined eye

  403. 403 William Jul 31st, 2008 at 4:35 pm

    Amazing work. Very creative!

  404. 404 Kamie Aug 1st, 2008 at 8:00 am

These are amazing. I must press you for more, I love the way they are portrayed.

    God, these are purely amazing.

  405. 405 Warlock Aug 3rd, 2008 at 1:17 am

Why are many people assuming the artist had some kind of shocking childhood?
And used that to define the images?
Did Frank Franzetta have to go to Mars to sketch pics of John Carter?
Did ERB have to be molested by Apes to write Tarzan?
Did Dean Kootz have to experience everything he wrote about in his books?

Imagination..big word I know. Look it up.

  406. 406 Carrie Aug 4th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

I love the touch of having the bunny in a gas mask too. There are a lot of things in these pictures that you have to look twice to notice.

Also, the spider on the kid’s stomach has ten legs.

  407. 407 Guinnevere Aug 6th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Found this site by StumbledUpon, and the photographs ARE disturbing, but that is the point. They address many of my own childhood fears, although of course the depictions did not necessarily match my own visions of those fears: as a child I played in my bedroom closet by day, and then dreaded that “Something” might be lurking inside it at night. And I used to play in the basement by day, but ran up the stairs as fast as I could at night, after getting the clean laundry out of the dryer, just in case Dracula or Something might be lurking at the dark end of the basement. Children’s fears do not have to be logical.

Many of the comments posted here were not logical, either. Some were annoying, some were amusing, but some of them made me agree vigorously: @204 KnowledgeNinja, @224 Bryan, @251 Coco, @280 lil, @290 Bossmuff (Your comments are Right On!), and @357 Noadi all made good points.

By the way, it took a bit of thought to understand how the first picture could depict a child’s fear, since the baby is sleeping peacefully, and is too young to experience the kind of fear depicted in this series. But then I remembered that many children have unresolved conflicting emotions over being “replaced” in the family by baby brothers and sisters, which would possibly emerge as a fear that “Something Bad” might “get” the baby. At least, that’s the interpretation that occurred to me.

The fact that so many people were worried about the children being exploited in some way – especially the little girl who was photographed wearing just underpants – reflects some deep fears, or conflicts, on the part of the viewers, I suspect. I do recall seeing a video about the making of “Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Dracula’” in which it took the director, the child welfare representative on the set, and the child’s mother to convince a toddler that the actress playing Vampire Lucy was just a normal person underneath all the makeup. He was utterly terrified! But the children in these pictures are all older, and I trust they are in on the artistic process in a way that a younger child could not grasp.

At any rate, all the controversy and strong reactions indicate that this project is an artistic success. The “this is sick” reaction or “this is crap” comment shows that at least the viewer was moved to a strong emotional response, and even when the comment was “Hmmmph! It didn’t scare ME!” it indicates otherwise. If the pictures did not have an effect on the viewer, why even bother to comment? We’re all viewing this site individually; there’s no one looking over our shoulders, for us to impress with how unmoved we are by the scary pictures, right?

    Good job!

  408. 408 GenuineSantaClause Aug 7th, 2008 at 11:20 am

I am not a big fan of spiders, but the images are very imaginative and extremely well done. I see that some comments think it is sick, but it is the stuff that dreams, or should I say, nightmares are made of, and is truly bona fide art work!

  409. 409 aoife Aug 7th, 2008 at 12:23 pm

wow, the way u have captured those are amazing! i feel 6 looking at these, especially the monster under the bed and the stairs. But my favourite is the clown one, i hate clowns and that one just creeps me out
    good job well done

  410. 410 Lori Aug 7th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

    satisfyingly disturbing. I love it.

  411. 411 TskTsk Aug 7th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Hope you are saving up a fund for this child’s therapy when she comes of age and realizes that you traumatized her with vivid imagery of everyone’s deepest fears to take some stupid photos. We might could make some art by throwing kittens off the Eiffel Tower on to white canvas and making pretty blood spatters, but it wouldn’t be ethical and neither is this. Yuck.

  412. 412 Alpha Aug 9th, 2008 at 6:52 am

    Creepy, great work!!!!!!

  413. 413 girl Aug 11th, 2008 at 10:21 am

the one with the creature under the stairs was exactly what i was thinking.

you are doing a fantabulous job!

  414. 414 The Arab Aug 12th, 2008 at 5:11 am

I effing hate clowns… they’re one of the few things that make me want to start punching furiously. As I type I’m reminded of my hatred of such things.

Child nudity in a non sexual art piece? OMG *flail* *flail* *Flail* someone call Jesus and interpol!

Some of the pics seemed like some worthless goth’s teenage “dark art”, but there were many that were really well thought out and hit home.

As for the holier than thou, jack boot, dumbass, bible thumping haters out there… whatever. You can go fist yourselves. Yeah I kinda questioned the girl in undies pic when I saw it, but for all you know the kid had a shirt on and he photoshopped the skin color over the color of the shirt (its pretty easy) to give that extra “oh crap I’m screwed” to the pic.

  415. 415 John Aug 12th, 2008 at 1:45 pm

Wonderful! I actually liked all of them, some for the photos but all for the amazing composition and ideas. Keep up the good work!

And all the haters that commented, BITE ME!

  416. 416 HyperExBlackDude Aug 13th, 2008 at 12:55 am

Most of those pictures made me lmao. I guess i have a sick sense of humor, but it made me laugh pretty hard.

  417. 417 Maarten Aug 13th, 2008 at 1:56 am

    well done, amazing work !

  418. 418 Brett Aug 13th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Regardless of whether you like or are repulsed by these images they create strong feelings and that’s what good art should do, I find it refreshing to stumble on this instead of the usual sunsets and motorbikes. Great idea and nice to see someone having an idea and seeing it through to completion. I would pay for these if they were posters.

  419. 419 Matt Aug 13th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Fan-Fucking-Tastic!!! To all those insinuating child pornography – GROW UP!! You’re the sick ones for even thinking that, as the author states, he has used friends and family as the subjects so get off your high horses!

  420. 420 Splooge_McDuck Aug 13th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

That monster under the stairs picture totally captures any trip down to any basement i had growing up. The thought still give me goosebumps. Great job.

  421. 421 Lien Tran Aug 14th, 2008 at 8:28 am

I saw this a few days ago.. and was thinking that “The Dentist” would have been a good one to include. Maybe in the future?

These are amazingly terrifying, by the way. You did a great job capturing the scary aspect in your photos.

  422. 422 WonderGirl Aug 14th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

I love the work and to the haters (specifically the ones seeing child porn here and the ones thinking your psychologically harming the kids) what about all the horror movies children are stars of??? Thats worse than posing in photos with trusted adults for a few mins/hours. Movies take months. And to the wannabe pedophiles who see a shirtless toddler as kiddie porn, go 51-50 yourselves, you need it.

  423. 423 Metal Cat Aug 14th, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Amazingly cool… very well set up.
Love this sort of work… Perhaps it should be You and Tim Burton redoing the Rocky Horror Picture Show… not stupid MTV!

But these photos are very slick… I personally love taking photos and playing with them in PhotoShop myself, and don’t see why even if you did uise it that it would be a bad thing… anyone who could make that in PS has defenitely got talent…

  424. 424 Heather Perkins Aug 15th, 2008 at 5:13 am

These are awesome. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like them. They’re like portable horror movies.

“It really makes you wonder what kind of childhood the author of these pictures must have had.

I don’t argue about the technical quality of the pictures themselves, that is understood, but the underlying mental structure of someone with those childhood fears must have had some important issues that now by means of photography can encounter some sort of sublimation.”

Um that’s a bit insulting; “issues”? What kid didn’t have some of those fears growing up? Unless they were ridiculously sheltered…

When I was young (like 8 maybe) I was afraid that there might be something scary under my bed at night. My parents certainly never told me there was, or let me watch horror movies at that age, etc. I had a great childhood. I just had an imagination.
When it was time for me to get in bed at night, I’d start running at my doorway and leap onto my bed so that my feet wouldn’t get near the underside of the bed lol.

  425. 425 Melissa Aug 15th, 2008 at 9:16 am

U are amazing artist.Your family sounds so cool.I love doing digital art to or photomanipulations. But i get stuck i see it but then i can’t get it out of my head.Love your work i will be checking ur site out again.

  426. 426 Willene Aug 15th, 2008 at 2:20 pm

I am a mother and grandmother and was terrified by my uncles when I was a kid.
To day I mainly watch horror films and movies, I love them! I think this is WONDERFUL work.
Keep up the good work! To your family, Awesome! THANKS

  427. 427 Mary Aug 16th, 2008 at 8:55 am

These are amazing. Nice work. I was always scared of something grabbing me so the one’s with the guy under the stairs, the monster under the bed and the hands reaching behind the couch are totally scary. I wanna put my legs on the chair so no one grabs them!

  428. 428 benedicte Aug 16th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

thats really scary, espescially the 1 under the stairs in the basement and the 1 behind the open fridge, but its really cool what you can create with makeup and wigs ect.brings back old memories, scary ones, amazing work:)

  429. 429 Pramathesh Borkotoky Aug 17th, 2008 at 8:42 am

    Mind Blowing.
These images just blows out the mind.
You are successful in what you do.
That is what a photographer should do.
May you touch new heights every day.

  430. 430 Kelton Aug 17th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

An amazing collection of art. Art is therapy. As far as Amanda’s statement goes: I wonder about a mind that doesn’t relate to these images. It must have dark, sub-conscious compartments of denial. Anyone who has actively engaged to explore and own their own shadow knows what I’m talking about. And as to Eatmeamanda’s statement, it seems quite childish in expressing the viewpoint. Using more professional language will get you a lot further in public and even with friends. Any idiot can throw around the “F” word from behind a pseudonym and I’m sure sure he (or she?) is not an idiot. It’s not that I don’t use the “F” word myself, but I try to make my language appropriate to the audience. It’s simply more effective communication.

  431. 431 curlyfry Aug 17th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

you have some great pictures … very imaginative :) i think that i suppressed a lot of these memories, though.

as for the photoshop, i do believe that it was used a little more than you admit. no harm in it, but there are a fews pics where it’s just a bit obvious. i had a professor that made us learn how to use photoshop to the extreme. i hated doing it, but it’s def something worth knowing!

    good job!!!

  432. 432 Aaron Aug 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

why are they all of little girls?

  433. 433 Lisa Aug 18th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

  434. 434 Francine Aug 19th, 2008 at 1:50 am

    OMG!

These pictures totally creeped me out! And more so cuz I was checking these out alone and in the middle of the night. Lol

I’ll never be able to get these out of my head…damn! Seriously, great work! Props to you!! I bow down to your greatness. ;-)

  436. 436 Tiffany Aug 19th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

little girls and boys run around on the beach without shirts on and noone is disgusted or yelling at their mothers.
they are not developed or sexually active, nor are they in sexual positions in these photos.
these are in no way sexual. and if you find them sexual then you have a serious problem.
    lighten up.

  437. 437 Aaron Aug 21st, 2008 at 8:09 am

    This is effing amazing!

  438. 438 Chrissy Aug 22nd, 2008 at 2:02 pm

I haven’t read through all the comments, so I don’t know if this has been brought up as a counter-argument to all the weirdos implying pedophilia but…

When you go to the beach in summer and there are like naked kids running around and playing in the sand, dooes your mind automatically go OMG sexual? ‘Cause that’s basically what some of you have just did – your mind going in the direction of sexuality when seeing a child in her underwear.

And that says a helluva lot more about you than the artist.

Regarding the pictures… I can see how it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea but, on the other side, I can’t see how anyone can deny their quality and the impression they leave, be it positive or negative.

    Cheers, artist!

  447. 447 Alan Aug 29th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Wow great stuff. As for kids being scared to pose for the pics then what of the children in horror films (ie Poltergeist)? And Paedofilia? Which ones? i guess i missed them. A babe in a nappy? A girl in her undies? As one person has already said paedodfillia is the sexualising of kids – this has no sexual intent or connotations. If sickos want pics of kids in knickers they can look in a clothing catalogue. Twisted people have to try to find evil in everything.

Besides that, they are great pics and very scary. My fave one is probably the girl with the dead mum and spiders. Shivers. The family pic on the bedside table really finished it off by showing a a happy normality.

  448. 448 widaca Aug 29th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Art is subjective form nowadays. Impressive work!

  452. 452 AgingGothMom Aug 31st, 2008 at 10:02 pm

I’m terrified of spiders. To the point where I almost wet my pants on the first photo and that one with the GIGANTIC one on the little child’s tummy. Barring those two photos which made me cry, the rest are AMAZING and I loved them. Ok, I even liked the spider ones but my fear (Which at 34 years old is still so strong), prevents me from really looking at them so I have to scroll quickly past them.

    Incredible photos.

  453. 453 monkin12 Sep 4th, 2008 at 12:48 am

great job, i used to think that there were things in the dark when i was a kid, and sometimes sat there and scared myself imagining what was there, so most of these remind me of when i was a kid, great work.

really fantastik!!! really nice!! i want see more!!^^

  460. 460 Stupowich Sep 8th, 2008 at 5:17 am

Sick. I hope the scenes weren’t fully setup (head in the fridge, monster under bed) when the kids acted for the photos. If that was the case, congratulations, you gave your bloody nightmares to your own kids. Don’t tell me you explained everything to them and they had great fun. I have a daughter by myself and kids develop fears pretty easily.
The photoshop job is well done tho.

  461. 461 james Sep 8th, 2008 at 9:32 am

man if that little girl doesnt have fears, she does after making all of the pics

  462. 462 Heather Sep 8th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

AWESOME stuff.. keep up the great work.

  463. 463 Jeff Stetman Sep 8th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Stupowich: Kids develop fears very easily if you’re a BAD PARENT. That’s right, I just called you a BAD PARENT. I’ll bet that you’re a coddler. In your paranoia (evidence is in your post here) you try to keep your child safe from all of the yucky things in the world, meanwhile doing MORE HARM TO YOUR CHILD than a set of obviously fake monster pictures (the kid was there, she saw the sets for these photos, I’m sure that she understands the difference between real and fake).

Kids develop fears easily if their parents coddle them and make them believe that fake latex monster heads will scar them for life. BAD PARENTS – like you.

  464. 464 Trish Sep 8th, 2008 at 4:47 pm

There pictures really creep me out. They not only portray fears I had as a child but fears I still have today. Even though I know they aren’t real, I have an active imagination. From an artistic point of view these are beyond stunning. The time, energy, and even love that was put into each piece really shows through. I’m honestly glad that my biggest fear isn’t portrayed. I have an inexplicable fear of waking up and seeing a face in my window. This fear is so strong and even when I’m in the car at night and someone I know puts their face next to the outside of my window when I’m not paying attention I scream (even when I’m expecting that they’ll do it). I would have had trouble sleeping if There had been a picture of it.

  465. 465 Kristen Sep 8th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

To everyone coming down on Dave for mentioning that a few of the pictures had a partially nude little girl, I think you should cut him a break. He is clearly aware of the fact that we live in a society where even female children might not escape being sexualized. Before I read his comment the same thoughts occurred to me but like I said, I think it has to do with how unsafe it is in our society to be female.

  466. 466 Jazz Sep 8th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

wow. I’ve just gotta say this. I never had childhood fears. A lot of my fears now happened like preteen+early teen era…..and these scared the CRAP out of me! =D hahahaha
it was great. cause it’s all dark right now and yeah. lol

    good job! =D

    I love stumble.upon.<3 lol

  467. 467 mikey Sep 9th, 2008 at 10:55 am

these are simply amazing , vary creative and really well executed . anyone who thinks this is sick or weird just dont truely understand them to the level they were suppose to be interpreted at .

  468. 468 Shangori Sep 10th, 2008 at 6:51 am

Great bunch of photo’s. Not entirely my thing tho. First one is the best in my opinion; artistic wise. Some of them could’ve been done better. Be careful with the lighting, it really does make things look ‘unreal’/photoshopped.

Statue of David was done by a gay perv (Michelangelo)
Manneke Pis done by a child molester
and don’t get me started about Da Vinci

Right.. Some people seriously need their heads checked. There is a difference between art and nudity.

  469. 469 nik Sep 11th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

Stumbled on this… these photos are amazing. i especially love the one with the monster under the stairs, that still scares me to this day.

  470. 470 Cajun Tinkerbelle Sep 11th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

These are absolutely BEASTLY works!!!! I have never seen anything like them!!! Brilliant work!! And for all you out there with nothing but criticism, trust me, your children have the same fears & nightmares as all the rest.

  471. 471 Jimbo_Fett Sep 11th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Totally freaking awesome!!! The composition, props, lighting…all of it is completely incredible! I stumbled upon this and sent it to just about everyone I know. As for the folks trying to pick this stuff apart and psychoanalyze the artist, STOP PROJECTING. If it is that disturbing to you, get back in your veal crate and lock the door!
Kudos, Joshua! This is some truly awesome work.

    P.S. I can’t buy prints ‘cuz yer website’s down :-(
P.P.S What’re you doing for Halloween?

  472. 472 Hywel Sep 12th, 2008 at 3:22 am

Absolutely wonderful; imaginative, realistic and executed without regard to convention. The critisisms above are all part of good art – without them there is only indifference.

  473. 473 rose Sep 12th, 2008 at 9:10 am

this is sooooooooooooooooo scary. these are some of my worst nightmears!!!!! i am gonna have nightmears now

    kool pics!!

  475. 475 Erika Sep 13th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

    Wow.
Am I the only one who finds it amazing that so many people identify with the same fears? What unity of the subconscience!
I identified with many of the fears here too. There are two childhood nightmares I particularly remember:
Many people were in a house, including myself and my father. A boy in a black shirt comes up to us and says, “The wolves are coming.” We see silhouettes of wolves in the windows. My father picks me up and puts me in the rafters of the house just as the wolves burst in. From the rafters, I can see the wolves eating my father alive…

DREAM #2: I am playing on the playground of my preschool with my best friend when I trip and fall into the mud. I struggle to get up, but I see a sign in front of me that says, “quicksand.” (I could not read at this time, but merely understood the meaning of the sign, I suppose. It was my dream…) I called to my friend and my teachers to help me out, but they said that the sign forbade them to do so or they too would fall in. I remember sinking…sinking…sinking…

The work was beautiful and haunting. I want to see more! Keep up the good work!

These are great. You really have talent. :)

  477. 477 Dalton B Sep 13th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Wow, all I need to say is…wow.

Freaking brilliant. These are truly masters of art. The photography is absolutely stunning in the most surrealistic way I can think of. That’s pretty frikkin surreal, wow. I must say, you did an absolutely wonderful job on costumes of sorts and well…Everything else, much much kudos.

  478. 478 Timmy Sep 14th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Nicely done, but I think if some of the images were more subtle in their horror they might actually be more terrifying. Simply because alot of childhood fears stem from imagination I think the images would be stringer if they left more to the viewers imagination.

  479. 479 Dr Carl Sep 14th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

lovely control of light, nice use of colour and composition….strong, in your face style of imagery…. well done. There is however one critical comment…..you speak of photoshop or your lack of use of it as a badge of honour? May I ask why?

is an image a lesser image if the artist has used a set of tools designed for such work?

now that I think about it…. ignore my comment… I wont take anything away from a great body of work…having built many sets myself I know the amount of work that has gone into this series of images…. bravo

    yours confusingly

wow – there seems to be a total fascist adherence to this gallery. While anybody has the right to enjoy these pictures, don’t people have the right to object to them? People who express dislike are being called curse words, bad parents, and pedophiles. That’s pretty extreme – its nice to see that when people have a blanket of anonymity, the first thing to get chucked out the window is respect for others.

Apparently only supportive opinions are tolerated on this comment thread.

    Wow!
    These are so nicely done!
They really capture some of the fears that I really did
have as a child growing up,
and even some that I still get chills thinking about.

    Monster in the closet…..check.
    Monster under the bed…..check.
    Stranger with candy…..check.
    Monster in the basement…..check.

I was totally afraid of these as a child and seeing these images now as an adult, really brought back memories. Thanks, I loved the work. Excellent job.

  488. 488 Cassi Sep 25th, 2008 at 7:43 am

Oh man! I had completely forgotten that I was so afraid of something being on the other side of the refrigerator door when I was a child! I got the willies all over again!

And the effin clown! I hate clowns!

    STUMBLED!
Truly amazing. i would love to do work like this. most of these are my childhood nightmares. anyways, for u pedophile freaks, put a homevideo on and see how u were half naked when u were a child. i go down my block and see little kids half naked. it’s called innocence. leave it. anyways, awesome and keep up the good work.

  497. 497 skittles Oct 3rd, 2008 at 7:43 am

I love the dramatic lighting, and just the reality that comes with these images. I love how contreversal they seem to have become. I think it means you really hit a nerve because these people really did have imaginations like this. It really does tell that emotion of fear.

    great moods, great texture….awesome job.

how much editing/prep did this take?

  498. 498 jimy Oct 5th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

I don’t care what the author says, some of these are without a doubt composite images and the photoshop work done is more than just adjusting color balance and levels. Normally I wouldn’t care, but the fact that the author claims they aren’t “photoshop collages” when some of them clearly are really pisses me off. I’ve been working with photoshop for 8 years and I know a composite image when I see one. I am 100% sure the following images are composites (multiple images combined into one): 3, 5, & 9. There are others I suspect are composites (7 & 11 for example) but they’re good enough I can’t say for sure that they aren’t actual photos that were made to look surreal through digital manipulation. That’s the thing; these are already really good, the author doesn’t need to lie to try and make them seem better.

And regarding the subject matter, I don’t see anything offensive here. There are some sexual undertones in some of the images but the only way you would notice is if you were trying to find them, which really says more about you than it does about the art.

  502. 502 Dav Oct 11th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

These images are stunning! I really like them… I was about to pic a favorite but I like too many of them… great work!

  504. 504 Hayley.13 Oct 12th, 2008 at 2:55 am

Wow these are absalutley amazing, they’re the only words i can think of, haha, some of them look really real, like the dead mother one, that was one of my childhood fears, i was always scared that one of my parents would die if i left them, even for 5 miniutes, or if they left the car when i was in it i would get scared that they wouldnt come back, im not entirely sure im over that one yet though haha. Keep working like this, its A.M.A.Z.I.N.G !!

CHILDHOOD FEARS, lol. I’m more than grown up and it scared the pizzle out me.

  506. 506 narcs Oct 13th, 2008 at 9:29 am

I didn’t really get the gas mask one, as I’ve never had a fear like that, but the monster under the bed and basement steps? Spot on. I still hate stairs that are “open” in the middle, so that someone can stick their hands through them and grab your ankle.

As for people complaining about half-dressed kids and possible traumatizing: grow up. Or after a second thought, don’t. Obviously you’re TOO grown up and have forgotten what it’s like to be a kid. Kids don’t care about wearing clothes, they don’t think being naked is sexual. We’re all born naked, right? And posing for a fantasy photograph like this is hardly traumatising, most kids would be delighted to play around with strange yet completely unreal and safe monsters like that. I would’ve taken a dinosaur rather than a regular doll for a playmate any day.

  507. 507 JoBo Oct 16th, 2008 at 12:41 am

Wow, I love your work. Creepy and surreal but so livid. If I saw these as a child, I’d probably have the same fears.

And I love the work with the wolf

  508. 508 elizabeth Oct 16th, 2008 at 10:27 am

i really think it’s irresponsible and cruel to involve children in scenes such as this. someone who would not want their child to see the figures in these images is not coddling their child and trying to keep them from the world, as this is not reality, it is one individual’s fears made visible through their own imagination. obviously, one does not encounter things like this in the real world. wars and starvation and hate crimes, yes, but not dead mothers in bed with bugs spilling out of their rotting mouths. if this is what goes on in your own head, and you feel that you must express it through art, do so, but don’t show it to anyone other than your therapist. there is no need to spread more darkness and fear into the world. especially when it involves infants and small children. we’re here to improve the world, not to make it look worse and scarier than it is already. i’m not accusing anyone of being a bad person, i just don’t think this is a positive or productive use of the artist’s obvious talent and skill.

  509. 509 valeriargh Oct 22nd, 2008 at 6:39 am

These photos took me right back too when I was a little girl and frightened of the monster under the bed, fabulous and I mean this, fabulous work. Each picture captures the essence of childhood fear perfectly.

As for all the people screeching Kiddie Porn I’m afraid that says WAY more about them than it does about the artist. I saw a little girl frightened of the closet monster, nothing more. Its a crying shame that all nudity, in this case semi nudity at worst, be it that of an adult or a child is sexualised. Says a lot about society that does.

I’m a photographer myself so I can appreciate the technical aspects of these photos also, in a word, astounding, photoshopped or not they show a great skill and talent for composing a shot and capturing an emotion.

Keep up the good work, I’m looking forward to seeing more of it.

Holy Wow… Your pictures amazed me.. Thats Pretty Hard to do,

  511. 511 Heather Oct 23rd, 2008 at 11:52 am

I think that it’s amazing how people react to these types of photos….
How they just jump right in and say “how dare you take a photo of a little girl almost nude”, How dare you this, or that.”
The statue of David is nude…. Children see it. Does that make us bad? No. It is a form of art. And while you may object to it… that’s for certain… objecting in such a way that makes you seem like an ignorant boob is another. Respectfully tell the artist and those who are reading why it is you don’t like the art…

As for all those people who say OMG it’s pictures of gross stuff…

  521. 521 Zola Zimmerchild Nov 3rd, 2008 at 3:41 pm

I find these images to be wonderful. They are full of “life” so to speak, and do remind me of my fears, not just childhood ones. Still, horror movies that scare me the most always involve children. Children encompass both inocence and fear.

The people that are saying this is border or is child porn, the ones saying that these are disturbing and the artist has some sort of psychological issue, the ones saying that children shouldn’t be involved in images like this, need to have a reality check. Belive it or not, doing stuff like this will sometimes help and child get over their fears. Not to mention there are so many scary things in the world already, why not have a little fun with fear?

    ~Zola.

I really like these! They very well capture the fears of childhood, i don’t think it was necessary, however for the underwear, innocence and insecurity could have been portrayed just as well with some footie pj’s :)

  525. 525 Lowell Nov 6th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

I hope these make you money, because you’ll be paying those poor kids’ head-doctor’s bills for a long time. Do whatever type of “art” you want, but for fuck’s sake why would you want to psychologically damage these kids who you claim are friends and family?

  526. 526 Leah Nov 6th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

heh, I’m still terrified of the dark and under my bed (even though I’m 15 :/ LOL) and these just made me a lot more afraid than I was before XD But this is really good-it kind of puts a face to our fears. Very amazing.

  527. 527 Purple Worm Nov 6th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

  529. 529 Bree Nov 7th, 2008 at 6:23 am

Wow. These are absolutely stunning. And whoever it was that said that children often dream up much scarier things, I totally agree. I dreamt up some pretty crazy stuff as a child…and still do on occasion. hahaha

    Lowell said:

I doubt participating in the creation of these pieces will mentally harm these children. In fact, it could even help them. Children have all sorts of nightmares, often much scarier than these. Letting them participate could actually help them get over their fears of things that we would call irrational like the dark, clowns, and the basement. Art can actually be very therapeutic to those who enjoy it. In fact, a lot of us that do, enjoy it for that very reason. But whatever you do, please do not discredit this as art. You may not enjoy this kind of art, but that doesn’t make it something else.

  532. 532 Michelle Nov 7th, 2008 at 11:49 am

Excellent. Stumbled here and am glad to have done so. Beautiful. Also, if the artist claims that these are not photoshopped, then why can’t we just believe him. Were you there when the image was captured? Then you don’t know, do you? Anyway, I hate people who have to drag others down just to feel better about what they themselves are capable of. Oh- I physically jumped and my stomach turned over when I saw the girl going down the stairs. Totally my childhood fear!! Thanks for the memories, really!

  533. 533 Sadpoet Nov 7th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

i cant tell you enough how amazing these pictures are! the pictures by themselves are not exactly what i feared as a child but rather a combination of several at a time. my favorite by far however, the clown behind the bed sheet. clowns have always terrified me. very well done! kudos!

  534. 534 Stephanie Nov 7th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

    Mommy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  535. 535 MommyOh Nov 8th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Okay, so these are very well taken photos and they show childhood fears fabulously. So, in that regard- kudos. But- who in their right mind would pose a REAL child in settings like this or allow their child to be in one? That’s just sick!

  536. 536 Maranda Nov 10th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

for the person who spoke about the half naked girl, that is completely moronic for you to even bring up. When I was little I used to walk around half naked at my house, even with my father home. That’s normal, because not all of us have sadistic father’s/male figures who are out to rape us. I don’t see anything wrong with that, and there are tons of little girls who sleep that way. The author hasn’t done anything wrong, but instead he’s just portrayed more accurately the childhood state. It’s innocent, and at that age, what is there to be ashamed of?

  537. 537 marsia Nov 11th, 2008 at 6:34 am

    Are you mental?

  538. 538 Thodwink Nov 11th, 2008 at 7:59 am

Dude, top class, excellent visuals, you have a rare skill..

  539. 539 singingsiren Nov 11th, 2008 at 10:35 am

I think these pictures are very interesting… but, I have to warn you about the one’s with little kids only wearing diapers/underwear. Even though these pictures have a grotesque nature to them and the children do cover themselves, some people could still submit this as child pornography and you could receive the consequences associated with that. I would highly recommend reshooting some of the pics with clothing on, since that would not hinder the grotesque and shocking nature of the pictures. I’m not a big fan of big brother watching over our backs… but I do believe that we have to be careful to not have them breathing down our neck.

  540. 540 monkkee Nov 12th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Whoa! Awesome stuff. I only just learnt how to manually get the exposure right on my SLR… Would love to have the creative talent like you do!

  541. 541 Ashtrayxx Nov 14th, 2008 at 8:43 am

    wow, they are mind blowing!
i recognize so many of these as my own childhood fears, either through emotions or nightmares. it is sort of relieving to see them here, as weird as that may sound.

for your information i had an amazing childhood, so keep your “the kid must be abused or lonely or something to think like that” mentality away. i was just always scared or many things. and now that i am a young woman and that i cannot put to blame on ghosts and monsters anymore, i suffer from anxiety.

actually if i could change one thing, just one thing about my childhood, it would be being scared so often and feeling like my heart would explode. adults don’t seem to realize how the fear of a child can take such enormous proportions.

    anyways, perfect, wonderful, good job.

  542. 542 maple Nov 14th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Being creative is seeing outside the box..I think they are awesome. Those of you with the negative judgment you obviously kept looking at the picture. Something kept you curious and interested even to the point of commenting.

  543. 543 Delta Nov 15th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

    Brilliant.

Interesting that while it is childhood fears they are still unsettling enough for some to attack the artist. If art is intended to provoke a reaction this has been a great success.

  544. 544 ArtIsCool Nov 17th, 2008 at 8:50 am

These are great photos. it brings back the memory of my childhood fears and laugh at it now.
You are really great with photography & editing. Your concept are unusual and creative. Keep it up!

  547. 547 Mattress Nov 21st, 2008 at 9:35 am

These photos are great, they even scare me quite a bit. A few of these photos reminded me of the show from a long time ago, tales from the crypt. I miss that show!

  548. 548 al Nov 23rd, 2008 at 2:23 pm

not particularly good, not particularly artistic. prurient B-movie pictures of children in “scary” situations. frightening comments from the peanut gallery. depictions of “fears” that have much more to do with adult superstition than actual childhood fears.

  549. 549 olegb Nov 24th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

watching these at 1:00AM alone in the apt is really creepy :]

  550. 550 laura marsh Nov 25th, 2008 at 6:23 am

These are fantastic! Where in the world do you get your props? Do you make them? The monster coming out of the closet is hideous, & I want to know: Did you construct that thing? Excellent use of color. My top 3 are: The candy house witch, the wolf coming down the stairs, and the tight rope walker. Well done!!

  551. 551 The Coz Nov 27th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Wow, like everyone before me has said, those are some seriously interesting images. The baby and the Tarantula hit home with me particularly, as I’ve always had a fear of spiders. Terrific work.

  554. 554 Sarah Dec 2nd, 2008 at 8:09 pm

These are beautiful. On his blogs, he talks about how the children are there when they create the scenes. If anything, it’s helping these children realize that the fears are manufactured. I love these, I can’t help but keep looking at them.

  557. 557 colleen Dec 6th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

You pulled the idea for the clown and the laundry from Stephen King’s It—which discounts every other image merely by association.

  558. 558 Mark Dec 7th, 2008 at 1:24 am

The review and analysis of fine art is a reflection of oneself. The vitriol expressing anger and hate towards the artist was most telling and does not speak well to the subject of one’s ability to think critically nor does it speak well to the subject of being able to discuss intelligently and critically.

  559. 559 Mikeyyes Dec 9th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Unbelievable, all my fears come to live, and everybody telling me monsters are not real, even try to tell this to my daughter!!, anyway really good stuff here liked it very very much. keep on making these kind of pictures. I see a bright future ahead…. cinema?

  560. 560 levi Dec 11th, 2008 at 11:44 am

So many words come to mind…..puerile, unimaginative, and sterile top the list. What makes it worse is the raving acceptance of the comments. As an artist, push yourself a bit further …..have a statement before you bring your work to the public, particularly in regards to the content. Pure shock, no substance, like Marilyn Manson without a message.

  561. 561 Mr.Olo Dec 12th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

The first one really got me. The rest was well done, but did not creep me out like the first. look at the hair. really, the hair had me. just like i hate scary old women with hair like that in all kinds of films. horrifying.

I’m 13 and have a few of those fears. CLOWNS! it gives me shivers just thinking about them. the thing in the basement.. doesnt help my room is down there.. the freakin getting grabbed from behind while watching TV at night. used to have the whole thing under my bed or in my closet thing. stumbled these. very good though ^_^ 10/10

I love these pictures and i am a child. I love the gasmask and the wolf ones. Yay ^ ^ .
I think it doesn’t matter what people think about your art though. Because clearly you
will do what you want anyways. I applaud your self approval and how you are all individuals
    to do this. Cheers.

  568. 568 Jackiechan Dec 26th, 2008 at 4:47 am

I don’t get the last two pictures they seem a bit out of place. a man on a line is that death? and a woman being pulled down the floor.. woah

The closet one was epic. simply fatastic and most of these picture portray the fear very good.
However what about the fear of something looking into your windows at night? now THATS scary

  569. 569 Tsh Dec 26th, 2008 at 10:10 am

These images are beautiful. And to Mick – the child will probably NEVER need counselling regarding fear. After seeing all of the behind the scenes stuff that goes into setting up a fantasy posed photo shoot, she will probably handle fear of the unknown better than most of us adults.

    I agree with jackie chan
i was always afraid of people looking in my windows and the stairs one was dead on
when i was little, and i had to walk down stairs like that, i always felt like something was going to grab my ankles

  575. 575 Perception Jan 3rd, 2009 at 2:36 am

“I think these pictures are very interesting… but, I have to warn you about the one’s with little kids only wearing diapers/underwear. I’m not a big fan of big brother watching over our backs… but I do believe that we have to be careful to not have them breathing down our neck.”

You’re kind of a fucktard if you even consider these pictures in that light, with any sexual connotation. Babies and toddlers are naked in diaper commercials all the time, as well as in public. They’re supposed to be half naked and dirty, that’s all the fun things about being a little squirt.

Any of you who even thought about that are fuckin’ weird man.

  576. 576 Perception Jan 3rd, 2009 at 2:38 am

Oh yeah and great work author. The one with the stairs, as well as the fridge and the wolf all definitely feel like familiar images I must have conjured out of the dark unknown when I was young. Many of the pieces evoked a now ancients set of fears.

    Thank you for that! =D

  577. 577 brian Jan 3rd, 2009 at 5:36 am

    i fucking love these pictures

  579. 579 Max Jan 4th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

This is just fucking child pornography it wouldn’t have half the views if you did use a naked minor. I’ve seen better photography from high school are class, what you’re doing is sick and those girls parents should be ashamed.

Ubber the creepy pics here. I am not a huge fan of the mecabre but the quality and message of these are simply stunning. And to those of you who just saw a half naked little girl did you also fail to notice that he seemed to take great care in covering any “rude” parts, and her facial expressions are so into the pic it looks like she was realy having fun with it! Good job man you have made me an instant fan!

  584. 584 Gems Jan 8th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

This is amazing; I was a bit terrified by the baby with the tarantula on its stomach. A lot of my childhood fears are on there and amazingly portrayed, even the reference to pennywise makes me shudder and I am now a proud 24 years of age.
The striking meanings coming from the images is something that people of all ages can interpret, for example seeing a child in a gas mask can be looked on in a nightmarish way, or as a parent and the emotions you would have going through this experience with your small children. Terrifying, yet utterly engaging and captivating.

  590. 590 Zack Feb 2nd, 2009 at 7:02 am

“You’re obviously going to get a lot of criticism on this series. Just remember that’s only because the vast majority of people are far too generic and prefer scenic pictures of sunsets. Truly, these are unique and magnificent photographs. With the abundance of such boring art, it’s very refreshing to come across something as haunting and creative as this. Very well done.”

This was very well said. I did not read all of the comments on here. But this one summed up the way I felt about this. I found these photos to be wonderful. Nobody will ever do anything that make everyone happy. This is a perfect example. Some are disgusted, some are captivated. To reiterate on what others said about having a disturbed childhood, that means nothing. Somebody can have a wonderful childhood and still have the ability to create these images. It is a shame that people find the need to put down others art when they do not like it themselves. If you do not like it, simply ignore it, why cast negativity upon it for those who do like it?

As for the little girl in the mirror goes, I don’t see the problem in it. Of course it is a provocative image, but the intent was not to be focused on the girl. Those of you who mentioned that It looks like child pornography need to take a moment to think about what you said. The picture was obviously not taken from the standpoint of child pornography, not even a little bit.

I do not think that people should be criticizing the artist for his use of children actors in such gruesome photos. Those who say that these are nearly child abuse need to relax. People go around making wild assumptions and accusations before really putting a lot of thought into it. I do not believe that these children are going to develop fears and issues because of this. He spoke that these actors were all family and friends, I highly doubt the artist would put his family and friends in situations they were uncomfortable in. Personally, as a child I would have enjoyed doing this. Halloween was always a big deal at my house and we had some very realistic props. Of course they struck a small amount of fear in people, but thats why you have them. If you think that it is bad to expose children to things that may strike fear in them stop taking them to the amusement parks and god forbid let them watch any scary movies. People like fear, thats why we ride roller coasters and watch scary movies.

Finally, the photoshop issue. Yes, these images are photoshopped. Yes, the artist stated this. No, they are not collages. No, it does not reduce the quality of the art. I don’t know why people need to point out that these are photoshopped when the artist already stated they were enhanced. There is nothing wrong with this. He used props to achieve the images and only added some minor details and adjusted color and lighting levels in photoshop. Whether photoshop was used or not is irrelevant. Who cares if it was used. The pictures were not meant to be perfect, true photos. These were meant to evoke emotions and display a very creative expression of fears that most everybody has experienced. These photos do just that. They are more effective in doing so because of the lighting and color tones adjusted in photoshop.

My apologies for such a long comment and somewhat of a rant. It just bothers me when people feel they must tear down another persons work and passion when they do not agree with the vision themselves. This is art, not everyone will see it, but there is no denying that this is art. The artist created very clear representation of a vision with the ability to evoke emotions in people by the work alone. That my friends, constitutes art. So please, if you do not like what somebody else has done, leave it alone, or if you feel something absolutely must be said, do it in a tasteful manner. Please do not attack somebody because you do not see things at the same level as them.

These photos are brilliant. Keep of the great work.

ammo…i am very horrible to see..i am afraid of them..

  592. 592 Elsol Feb 12th, 2009 at 5:45 am

Excellently made, though I would have been more impressed if the pictures weren’t so heavily post-edited/touched up. And I have to agree with one other poster; infants don’t generally recall childhood fears, so the first picture seems a little out of place for the subject material. But otherwise, you’ve done a great job capturing atmosphere and tension.

Ignore the people complaining that this isn’t art, or is a medium for paedophilia; you cannot control how others will interpret your work. The world wasn’t always such a politically correct, protective, coddling place. Indeed, I’d hazard half of these pictures, shown to people 200 years ago, wouldn’t raise an eyebrow.

  593. 593 Jason Feb 16th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

    These are wonderful.

They really tap into the depths of my childhood anxieties.

  601. 601 Rowan Apr 3rd, 2009 at 7:52 pm

These are beyond amazing. The quality of each shot simply blows me away. Despite the people who insist that little girl will need therapy, I disagree. I loved monsters from the time I was a small girl, and would have LOVED to be in a shoot like this. Bravo!

    WOOOWW!!!!

  603. 603 David Apr 9th, 2009 at 1:59 am

Wow – interesting stuff! You have somehow taken really classic horror imagery and turned it into something subtly different – somehow more surrealist. I love that. Ignore the mini-minds who keep ranting in a ‘protect the children’ vein – i think Sara (Dec 2nd above) hit the nail on the head. This kind of theatricality must be really great fun and even helping to draw a nice line between fantasy and reality. Know your fears = know how they are made!

Oh and to all the photoshop howlers (why is it that, in EVERY blog post featuring even the most surreal images, some morons have to come out of the woodwork and start yelling ‘photoshopped’? Is spotting a photoshop artwork a national sport?) – of COURSE they are photoshopped! He said as much himself! What he meant was that these are theatrically staged, then given some final processing in photoshop to complete them! A great approach in my opinion.

  604. 604 Rachh Apr 9th, 2009 at 4:54 pm

Some of these were insanely creepy, amazing work.

  605. 605 tammy Apr 13th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

I think the comments on here would make a great psychology experiment themselves…

For these people that are saying they never had any fears – one, I call bullshit and two, what sad, boring lives you must have had. I had a perfectly normal suburban childhood with loving parents and I have loved being scared my entire life whether by spooky movies, or simple slumber party ghost stories. Fear is normal – it is not the result of being “sick” or having a jacked up childhood. It may not be your bag, but to pretend to psycho-analyze people for it is crap.

My kids would LOVE to participate in stuff like this! Because they’re intelligent and they get that it’s not real.

There are truly some very close minded and ignorant people out there…

I LOVE the pictures and I agree, there a few I would include – the Dentist (great call!), the long dark hallway, and my scariest one – the closed shower curtain!

I know some people said they didn’t get the first one, but if I’m not mistaken, it’s straight out of “Scary Stories to tell in the Dark.” That’s one of my favorite spooky stories.

    Well done.

the pic with the child coming down the stairs with the monster under really freaked me out.

  608. 608 Cara May 8th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

These are incredible. I always had and still have childhood fears even though I’m in High School. I think that all of these pictures show the many different types of fear in children. For example, the one of the dead mother and child. I know that I never had a fear of my mother lying on her bed with insects coming out of her mouth, but I always have and still have a never-ending fear of my mother’s death. Another really great one was the refrigerator one. I don’t know why, but there’s something especially eerie about walking around a dark kitchen at night.
Memerizing pictures! Excellent work. Keep it up!

  609. 609 phoenix2life May 9th, 2009 at 11:43 am

    Hmmmm…very scary…

  610. 610 Victoria May 9th, 2009 at 6:00 pm

OMG! The majority of my fears were imprinted on this screen in front of me. I thought I felt my heart stop at the picture of the woman in the bed with bugs all around her and her mouth was all deprecated. Like photos 1, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15… That’s a lot of fears I saw when I was a kid. The one with the scary guy and the curtains (like a theater…) I’ve had a nightmare or twenty in black and white with something very similar.

The photos are great though. …shudders… realistic too.

but so lucky I never faced some kind like those fears
I forgot what my greatest fear was (-__-)

  613. 613 Heidi Jun 4th, 2009 at 8:47 am

The picture that got to me is the one with the head in the fridge, and the guy standing on the other side of the door. I STILL sometime slam the fridge door (and most every other door in the house) in fear of something like HIM behind it.
Without imaginations like yours, the world would be incredibly boring.
I love these, I hope to see more.

  614. 614 Michelle Jun 8th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

What I like best about these is that the monsters are not the fluffy, funny creatures most cartoons, movies, etc make them out to be, like a child can’t see a truly scary creature in their imaginations. They show the very real terror a child can feel about such things. I personally love the Dead Mother ones. Maybe because my mother is dead? They’re all terrifying and beautiful.

  615. 615 Jim Jun 14th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Crazy stuff to say the least. However, I wouldn’t want my little girl seeing this type of imagery… let alone taking a part in them. You must be one sick fuck to subject a little girl to this. Hope you plan on paying for therapy when she grows up!

  616. 616 William J. R. Vincent Jun 14th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Excellent work. These are well done and definitely capture the horrors and fears that some of us experienced when we were children. I know when I was younger I was always creeped out about what could be lurking beyond what I could see in the dark. In fact, I still am; I’m probably going to go board up my closet now and install flood lights in my living room. Also, excellent use of your friends and family, you guys must be one heck of a crowd.

  619. 619 Tara Jun 14th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Absolutely amazing. I’m convinced that none of the children were emotionally scarred. I didnt notice the head in the fridge the first time. Nor the spider in the attic the first 4 times. Hehe. Beautiful. And not to mention original. Love it.

  624. 624 Bacchus Jun 15th, 2009 at 10:02 am

Childhood fears, that great collective conscious that spans both personal and geographical borders, be it Babau, mörkö or just plane bogyman. I like the images and while depicting the fear I don’t think they go nearly far enough to shot the scale. As a child fear is greater than just the physical monster under the bed or the horror of the physical appearance of the creature. You ask most people and they will tell you just what the monster under the bed looked like or the colour of its skin, in truth what they recall is a culmination of sharing that fear or representations of it in art or media. I know to express this in a photographic media would be hard but I think to convey fear the images themselves would need to move more towards the surreal.

  625. 625 Kit Jun 15th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Wow. A lot of absurdity in this comment thread. I almost find it scarier than the pictures really.

In my mind, a partially naked child doesn’t scream pedophile unless said child is somehow sexualized. I *really* do not see this as the case. It makes me wonder about the current mind set of people in this regard though. Sort of paranoia mixed with even more than Victorian ideal of “innocence”.

I also doubt the children involved were very much traumatized at all. I swear that the mindset nowadays with some of the pro-child safety types seem to be bubble rooms and burkas for everyone under 18. The photo shoots were probably fun to the kids.

  627. 627 [Sukie] Jun 15th, 2009 at 3:29 pm

I love ‘em, really. I’ve kept this window open all day, and whenever I walk back to my computer, I look at them again. I love the style they’re done in, with the almost Victorian feel (but don’t quote me on that era, I don’t know my history for a damn).
And, while I’m here…anyone else notice that in the picture where the woman is being pulled into the floor, one of the hands is on her boob? Haha, sorry, random. Great artwork though.

I would like to start by saying Thankyou Joshua. These images are both visually and emotionally stunning. It has been a pleasure just to view them. Some of these people have no clue what they are saying or how they are saying it, but these images are designed to invoke an emotion and even if the person is creeped out by them you have accomplished your goal. As a special effects make up artist myself I just say BRAVO! and hope one day that our lives will cross paths and I may get to do some work with you. For now I wait eagerly and will watch your website for more spectacular work. Some of My work is displayed in the attached website and please keep up the amazing work.

  637. 637 billyboy Jun 19th, 2009 at 6:43 am

Very cool. When the site first loaded I was literally shocked. These may not be my childhood fears exactly, but the idea is great. Personally, the imagery I carry in my head of my childhod fears are more of the faceless, less horror movie specific…think the creatures in “Pan’s Labrynth” or Dr. Satan from “House of 1000 Corpses” where you can’t quite mentally define what something is, which makes it even more terrifying.

I have to weigh in on the little girl and the closet pic. Instead of looking at it from the outside and seeing a half clothed child, it begs you to look at it as if you ARE a half clothed and vulnerable child. In Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, the Gunslinger pays a high complement to a character who has to fight his way out of a situation while completely naked. The vulnerability factor goes up a notch when you don’t have the security of clothes. It becomes all the more scary if you use your imagination rather than simply pass judgement on a superficial level.

Technically, these photos are awesome. People don’t always realize how difficult it is to create a moody situation bright enough to photograph in. Well done!

  638. 638 Marie-Eve Boucher Jun 19th, 2009 at 9:52 am

OOOOOOOOH I loved this collection. Not only beautiful but right on. The childhood fear of mine I found here is the one in the stairs…. * shivers *

Oh, and to the people going nuts about the little girl in her panties : get your head checked out if you see pedophilia or pornography there.

Wow, I cant resist looking back at these… and another thing, no fucking shit its photoshopped! HE SAYS that in the description… its part photoshopped, part props, part horribly realistic, part TRUE art. He completely recreates my fears of the under the bed,in the basement, and in the closet. Great work and to the people wo point out the nudity, he says he uses his friends and family so chill out… btw Stumbled

Interesting, incredible use of shadow, colour, and composition… often the scariest thing is what we don’t know… on the other hand, sometimes presenting something shocking forces us to face something confronting, I’m not all that into horror like this, however I have to give credit where credit is due, this is all amazing art…

  644. 644 erm Jun 22nd, 2009 at 2:49 pm

I get the point. I understand the expression here, and from technical aspects I appreciate these and they’ve obviously accomplished their goal with an added bonus of shock value.. but I feel bad for some of the children in the more graphic photos. I would be very confused after this if I were little. Maybe because I am a parent, but I wouldn’t really want my children o be exposed to this. I had all of these “fears” and then some as a child, and still do. Who doesn’t?

  645. 645 Chillax Jun 23rd, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Amazing work, very creative and ingenious.

To those that are judging the use of kids, Get over it.

Umm..Firestarter, Nightmare of Elm Street, Friday the 13th, etc…all used kids. It’s thinking outside of the box, outside of the “safe” reality, outside of the suburban home that can make a exceptional artist. We as kids all grew up fearing something. Whether it was fearing meeting new people in a new school to the boogie man.

    It’s called make-believe! Remember.

“The thing under my bed waiting to grab my ankle isn’t real. I know that, and I also know that if I’m careful to keep my foot under the covers, it will never be able to grab my ankle.”
    — Stephen King

  646. 646 Laura Jun 23rd, 2009 at 6:04 pm

This is really amazing! It’s like everything I was scared of when I was a kid, exactly. All those things I could never quite put a face to, yet feared nonetheless, are finally on film and I think it is actually quite remarkable. Honestly it may help people with fears that they cannot explain, to be able to confront their unexplained fears with an image that is clearly defined right before them. You can’t be afraid of the unknown when the unknown is right before you, plain as day, and no longer unknown. Quite an achievement.

very interesting work, lovely in fact! i just have to take exception to your disclaimer re photoshop. i’m not sure if you meant to, but it seems you feel there is more integrity in your work because you don’t use photoshop to create your images. if using models works for you, great. i’m all for it. but please don’t disparage those of us that use photoshop for more than tweaking colors and contrasts. photoshop is just another tool in the artistic arsenal, no better, no worse than a pencil, a camera, a brush, some fingers, or a figure model. each to his own.

  650. 650 GothicMonkey Jun 24th, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Holy crap that clown one scared me nearly to death! I have a severe fear of clowns thanks to that Stephen King movie I watched when I was 12. I for one love your images, so surreal and terrifying. I now have a dark and twisted imagination due to all the horrors I’ve read/seen/heard about. Great job on these!

    Great work

  653. 653 bounce Jul 4th, 2009 at 8:29 am

Why are they all girls, Joshua? Why no boys? Is scary stuff only worth looking at if it’s little blonde girls getting scared? Is that how they’re supposed to be?

I used to be a little boy once and some of those fears are my fears too. I think it’s lazy use of stereotypes, and intellectual dishonesty not to allow any possibility for these images to have a connection with the artist himself.

And don’t call it ‘Childhood Fears’ – you’re leaving half of the human race out. Call it ‘Scared Little Girls’ if that’s what you’re really into.

  654. 654 Kat Jul 6th, 2009 at 2:46 am

I absolutely LOVE these images, simply outstanding stuff!!

As for the comments from people who see it as not art, disgusting, or pornography.
Art is subjective, each viewer will look at the exact same image completely different, that’s what makes it art, it will mean something different to each person who looks at it.

But as for it being pornography, no, not even close.
She is not being objectified sexually, she’s not in any type of sexually appealing or tantalizing pose, there is simply nothing sexual about anything she is doing in the images.
It’s simply not sexual, therefore not pornography, and if it were taken to court to determine that, the accuser would lose. The supreme court would rule that these are not pornopgraphic, I’d place money on their ruling.

And I want to give credit to the girl, how brace of her to play front and center in such scary images.
I’m 39 and there’s no way they’d get me to pose for any of those shots that she did….LoL

  655. 655 tori Jul 10th, 2009 at 2:25 pm

i absolutely love ALL of these photographs! i would love to see one done in black and white, thus adding more drama and gettin the point across more clearly. perhaps you can also add more feeling into the childrens’ faces (perhaps screaming?). anyways keep up the good work and i look forward to seeing more of your tremendous artwork :)

  660. 660 hz Jul 25th, 2009 at 11:12 am

the scariest thing about these images is the number of idiots they’ve brought out of the woodwork. one small example JEN comment 149; Jen, please grow a f~~~ing brain. no, the child hasn’t learned how to be a porno model. it’s not “ethically sketchy”.

what the hell is your preoccupation with ‘panties’?

Oh my! I had to scroll up and down, several times over when I stumbled this page. At first the pictures were disturbing, and almost got a thumbs down, “Not for me”. But then I took another look, and realized that these are truly the work of a brilliant mind. To be able to draw that kind of reaction out of his “actors” and capture it with his camera. The sets are so elaborate, and well thought out. I can’t think of one single childhood fear he didn’t touch upon for me. Some fears that I even have now, the pics made me shudder. GOOD JOB! Unbelieveable.

I worry about the kids being scarred by these pictures though.
Besides that though, it’s a very different approach to horror photography. I dig it. :)

This is really clever! I can see the beauty in this work. I don’t see why everyones kicking off, especially about the little girl in the pants!! Little girls are always running around in them, its innocent, if you think differently your weird.
Also Andy said something about not being sure about the infant having “fear”, maybe it represents a nightmare when your older, dreaming of when you were a baby.
My favourite is the toddler outside the witches cottage, the contrast between beauty and evil is lovely!

I wanted to say that the children in these photos are really beautiful. Also, I think if I had walked up to a clothesline as a child and saw that silouhette and big clown shoes behind a sheet, I would have died of fright instantly. Makes me shiver even now… Well done. :) Thank you for sharing.

  678. 678 Bob Sep 1st, 2009 at 3:40 pm

These are incredible, first and foremost. The evoke the remembrance of fear, and that, to me, makes them art.

As for some of the other comments, I really think people should chill on the “naked kid” thing. Some of the other comments stated that nakedness equals vulnerability and innocence. That’s a very basic truth for children. Most adults, however, see nakedness as shameful (which is surprising to me, as I’d think our society would prefer to laud the human body as a natural thing and shun violence, but sadly that’s not the case), and that’s why they’re viewing the photos as borderline abuse. Now, I’m all about the safety of children, but calling these photos “short of kiddie porn” is ludicrous.

Someone else mentioned reading Grimm’s Fairy Tales as a background before looking at these images and they’re right. In the original Little Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf has her remove her clothes before joining him in bed to be eaten. The vulnerability of nakedness combines with the monster to bring about a sort of loss of innocence motif that is emotionally stirring.

My last point is to the person that said that modifying the photograph with Photoshop makes it not true photography. I beg to differ on the point that a photographer that does not modify their photos somehow to make them more aesthetically pleasing nowadays is very, very rare. even without computers to do the retouching work.

  679. 679 Anony Sep 1st, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Wow these are amazing. It really captures the fear as well as the double meanings that help explain where some of these fears come from. Also: Childhood fears? I’m still creeped out about going into dark basements…

I don’t think you have any idea what “1984″ is about. That you would think fear-based self-censorship is somehow a better alternative to possible government punishment shows that Orwell was spot-on.

  684. 684 adam Sep 5th, 2009 at 3:36 am

These are pretty creepy, though a few of them have seen a little more photoshopping that you admit to I suspect – the monster under the stairs, the wolf descending the stairs, the haunted candy shop, the open fridge etc.
    Collage not just finesee!
I can see there’s been a lot of time spent on these, but they all lack the subtlety of real childhood fears – we don’t actually ever see these things as children, so why make them up like hollywood creature fx when all that does is make it look fake – ie. these dead people don’t look anything like dead people, they look like actors in make up.

The scariest thing about Childhood fears is the fact they are never visualised, only imagined – and in the same way that films like ‘the shining’ and ‘the others’ suggest terror rather than shove it in your face, it’s the ambiguity and the unseen that is really scary.

  685. 685 JaK Inna Bocks Sep 6th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

First off, congrats. These are truly insightful and portray a childs imagination and unfounded fears completely.
I feel sad for those who cannot connect with these images, they must have had a very boring and unimaginative childhood, and probably have no healthy fear of the true dangers in this world.

My main childhood fear, were mirrors in the dark. I used to see all kinds of horrors in them, and to this day I do not have a mirror in my bedroom, or a dark place!

As for “Dave” who suggested having the little girl in her underwear was sick,….only a sick mind would go there Dave, healthy kids are often half dressed, is natural, and it adds to the vunerability the artist is trying to portray…..maybe you should register yourself in your neighborhood.

    ~JaK~

  686. 686 Olly Sep 9th, 2009 at 6:43 am

What a sad world we live in when anybody who creates an image with a child not wearing a fully buttoned-up dufflecoat in is accused of being a ‘child pornographer’. For all those of you who said this, shame on you, you ignorant unthinking morons. Go back to reading the Daily Mail.

I thought these were brilliant and recognised a lot of them from my own childhood. Thanks for making them.

WoW! You really hit a nerve with a lot of viewers! I am totally disturbed by the photos, but I also love them! I think your prologue explained was very well put. My favorite fear would be the clown behind the sheet. Creepy! If I had to add any, I would suggest a two sided wall; where you can see what is awaiting the child/person on the other side. Or one of my biggest fears is a spider under the sheets of my bed… Looking again, I am also freaked out by the child looking in the fridge, and a monster behind the door. I believe that if people don’t have anything nice to say, they shouldn’t say anything at all. What happened to those days? Thanks for sharing your AMAZING pictures and views! I don’t watch scary movies, so this was hard for me to look at, but I’m glad I did! By the way, I found your site by way of John Milleker on Twitter. Have a nice night, & don’t let the bed bugs bite!

  692. 692 Me Sep 18th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

I know the picture is not meant to be pornographic, I completely understand the artistic aspect of these incredible pics, but that girl is simply too old to be photographed like that…

I would be surprised if you do not get contacted by some authorities to remove that picture.

Once again, I know you’re intent was not bad, but after a few years of age, adults have no business photographing them in their undies… much less publishing the photos online.

  693. 693 Tara Sep 20th, 2009 at 10:45 am

Very creative. Very creepy. Very disturbing. The baby photos maybe a bit to far. Would have been even better if older children were used in stead of babies. Be careful with young children because you could end up causing them more fear than they already have.

These images are frightening and also very creative. My favorite day in the year other than my birthday is Halloween so these give me even more idea’s on what to help my grandfather craft to put up in the yard. We have a bit of a tradition of adding at least one new piece to the yard every halloween so these just spark up new Ideas to start sketching out for production. Kudo’s on these pictures, just amazing how you can get family and friends together for artistic works. Its a good way to strengthen relationships, by doing random fun things together.

I “stumbled” on these photos. I stumble on a lot of photographs. I’ve never left a comment before now! This series is so hauntingly and freakishly and terrifyingly beautiful. The composition definitely lends to the creepy factor. I almost died when I saw the picture of the monster under the stairs. Definitely one of my fears.

Looks like you had a blast doing these. It shows! Keep it up! And remember for every ‘normal’ person out there who wouldn’t understand something like this there are 10 ‘freaks’ who absolutely get it!!

The tree from my bedroom window used to make shadows on my wall that was a monster and when the wind would blow I thought it was reaching for me and would pull the covers over my head and hide. Shadows in the night even as an adult can make us imagine and see things that aren’t real..or are they?

Having these young children pose in these situations for “fun” borders on child abuse. Perhaps you should use photoshop, instead of subjecting these young children to your darkest fears. ”

if any of you had done any research before posting the narrow minded views of a disney channel generation you’d know that the children in the photos are his own children, who enjoy the shoots. The way society has become so PC is depressing. Did none of you have a half clothed picture of yourself as a youngster? I used to run around the beach in just my pants till i was 6 or so. it’s no big deal.

the photos are beautiful, again look on the website and you’ll see he has only used photoshop for colour adjustments, he sets elaborate scenes.

as a fellow photographer and fear analyst artist i know how difficult it is to inspire fear in photographs, the expressions of the children make the photograph.

and one more thing on the images of the half clothed girl, do you think all paintings with cherubs should be taken down from every public viewing place? you have a twisted mind to think thats wrong.

The little girls are his daughters if your wondering, Joshua Hoffine uses a lot of family members and friends in his works

  710. 710 Ophexis Jun 19th, 2010 at 5:58 pm

I don’t understand why some people assumed the artist had a fucked up childhood….Like somebody else said, I also had an amazing childhood and I still love morbid story and pictures. It’s just curiosity.

Also, the point or art isn’t to appeal to everybody all the time. It’s to give an emotion. I liked most of them since I love that type of art, but the one with the monster under the stairs freaked me out the most, since I have, and I still run up the stairs in case something grabs me…

These were amazing~ I was always very supersticious for a reason (I still am somewhat), and the more I think about it, it’s not just the stairs one that gave me the creeps…there were the bugs, and the hands coming frm behind the couch…
When it’s dark and I read stuff like that, I often end up looking behind me…or last time I was alone in my house I also ended up beind nervous for a moment, but I just thought about other things…

Anyway, thanks a lot for creating those amazing pictures.
