The term “buffalo” is commonly used interchangeably with “bison” when describing the North American animal in question. Although technically incorrect, “buffalo” is acceptable when there’s no chance of confusion with the true buffaloes of Africa.
“Commonly known as” doesn’t mean “is”. We can call a bison an American Buffalo all we want but it doesn’t magically turn it into a buffalo anymore than calling a Koala Bear a “Bear” makes it an actual bear.
